Valentine Scores Six Goals, but Penmen Fall 16-14 to #18 Bentley

SNHU Honors Seniors, Will Meet Saint Anselm in Playoffs

(Hooksett, N.H.) - Senior Chris Valentine (Derry, N.H.) scored six goals, but Southern New Hampshire's upset bid of #18 Bentley University fell short 16-14 on Tuesday night at Penmen Stadium.  Junior Gennaro Marra (Derry, N.H.) broke an 11-year program record for career ground balls.

  • Senior Tristan Pietz (Dudley, Mass.) - goal, 3 assists
  • Junior Ryan Auger (Derry, N.H.) - 2 goals, assist
  • Marra - 15-for-31 faceoffs, 10 ground balls, 1 goal
  • Graduate student Nolan Isabella (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) - 5 ground balls, 2 caused turnovers
  • Sophomore Cam Cote (Saco, Maine) - 5 ground balls, 1 caused turnover
  • Sophomore Ronan Depaul (Elkton, Md.) - 12 saves
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Falcons scored the game's first three goals, and took a 3-1 lead to the second quarter after Valentine found the net off a pass from senior Owen McCuin (Hinesburg, Vermont) with just under a minute left.
  • The Penmen tied the game at 4-4 with a man-up goal by Fleming with 7:24 left in the half, but Bentley scored four times in the four minutes to move back up by four.
  • Valentine again tallied late in the period to cut the deficit to 8-5 at the half.
  • Valentine tallied twice more in the third quarter, bringing SNHU back to within 9-8 with 3:33 to play in the period, but again the Falcons hit for three quick goals and took a 12-8 lead to the fourth.
  • SNHU scored three consecutive goals in the fourth, including Valentine's 29th of the season, to tie the game at 13-13 with 5:28 left, assisted by Auger.
  • Bentley went up 14-13 on a goal by Ryan Birch, only to have Marra win a face-off and race down the field to score to tie the game again with 4:50 to play.
  • The Falcons won the game on a goal by Conor Segreti with 2:39 left, and added an insurance marker by Devin Smith with 2:15 remaining.
  • Keaton Roarick made eight saves to pick up the win.  
NOTES
  • The Penmen win streak, the second longest in program history, was snapped at six games.
  • Bentley had a shot advantage of 43-40, while the Penmen had the advantage on ground balls 32-30.
  • Marra's 10 ground balls give him a career-total of 278 - a new program record.  Gary McKay had 275 ground balls from 2008-2011.
  • Valentine has 29 goals this season, and 81 in his career.  His six goals were a season-high.
  • Valentine was one of ten seniors honored by the program in a pre-game ceremony.  The others were Pietz, Isabella, McCuin, goalies Oscar Kozikowski and Alex Sturgess, Connor Doucet, Will Zambernardi, Jackson Houchell, and Jeremy Handman.
  • Bentley's lead in the all-time series 27-4.
          
PLAYOFFS/ UP NEXT
  • The Penmen finish in sixth-place, and will visit #3 Saint Anselm College on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.   #5 Bentley will travel to #4 Pace.
  • Adelphi will be the top seed after defeating #2 Le Moyne on Tuesday in the regular season finale, giving the Panthers the NE10 regular season championship.
