Women's Lacrosse Opens 2022 With 14-13 Win Over No. 7 Roberts Wesleyan

Three Penmen notched three goals and an assist

Hooksett, N.H. -- Junior Skylar Renaud (E. Waterboro, Maine), sophomore Shelby Cole (Gilford, N.H.) and senior Erin Gorton (Kennebunk, Maine) each registered three goals and an assist as the Southern New Hampshire University women's lacrosse team captured a 14-13 win over  seventh-ranked Roberts Wesleyan College in the season opener on Sunday afternoon at Penmen Stadium. 
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS 
  • Renaud – 3 goals, 1 assist 
  • Gorton – 3 goals, 1 assist 
  • Cole – 3 goals, 1 assist 
  • Junior Angelina Graziano (Riverhead, N.Y.) – 2 goals, assist, game-winning goal. 
  • Senior Madison Peredna (Derry, N.H.)  – 1, goal, 1 assist 
  • RWC's Madison Bell had a game-high 7 goals and 1 assist. 
KEY MOMENTS 
  • Roberts took a 2-0 lead, but SNHU responded with back-to-back goals to tie it at 2-2. The Redhawks answered with a pair of goals to end the quarter up 4-2. 
  • SNHU scored the first 5 goals of the second quarter to take a 7-4 lead. However, Roberts responded with three-straight of its own. 
  • The Penmen scored with just over a minute left in the first half and went into the break up 8-7. SNHU held a 20-18 shot advantage in the half. 
  • In a back-and-forth low scoring third quarter both teams scored twice and SNHU clung to a 10-9 lead after three periods. 
  • RWC opened scoring in the fourth tying it at 10-10 in the opening minute of the quarter. 
  • SNHU scored the next four goals to take a 14-10 lead. The run included two man-up goals. 
  • RWC closed late with three goals, including one with 22 seconds remaining, but could get no closer. 
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • Junior goalkeeper Caela McCartney (Arvada, Colo.) registered nine saves for the Penmen. 
  • SNHU held a 39-30 advantage in groundballs. 
  • Roberts held a 16-15 edge in draw controls, but SNHU held a 6-3 edge in the fourth quarter. 
  • SNHU went 4-7 in free position shots, while RWC was 3-4. 
  • The Penmen held a 33-29 shot advantage for the contest. 
  • Natalie Arieno made 10 saves for the Redhawks. 
NOTES 
  • Head Coach Carissa Medeiros in her first game as coach of the Penmen earned the win. She took over the program in the summer of 2021. 
  • SNHU won its season opener for the first time since 2017 at Chestnut Hill. 
  • This was SNHU's first win over a ranked-opponent since April 19, 2016; a 15-10 win at Stonehill. 
  • SNHU improved to 2-0 lifetime against Roberts. The Penmen opened the season with a win over the Redhawks in 2016. 
WHAT'S NEXT 
  • The Penmen are back in action Friday, March 11 (3 p.m.) when they travel to Post University. SNHU's next's home game is Saturday, March 26 at noon when its plays host to Queen City rival Saint Anselm College at Penmen Stadium.
