Senior Priscila Castro (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) tallied nine kills, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team was handed a 3-1 (16-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-12) defeat by host California (Pa.) University on Friday evening in its second match at the Vulcan Invitational at the Convocation Center.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Castro hit a team-best .320 to go with 11 digs.
- Sophomore Irem Bat (Istanbul, Turkey) posted eight kills, 15 digs and a pair of blocks.
- Junior Jaclyn Maguire (Rochester, N.Y.) recorded six kills and three blocks.
- Sophomore Joanne Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) dished 16 assists, collected seven digs and served up a pair of aces.
- Senior Jessica Dillon (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) just missed a double-double with nine assists and 10 digs.
- Senior Shaira Sanabria (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) racked up 15 digs.
- Junior Amanda Costales (Wantagh, N.Y.) chipped in three kills and a team-high four blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Southern New Hampshire held a 9-8 lead in the first set when a 5-0 run – capped by a Coffey ace – widened the gap to 14-8. It was later 20-15 when the Penmen reeled off five of the final six points of the set, including another Coffey ace, to go up, 1-0, in the match.
- SNHU jumped in front, 10-4, in the second set with Castro contributing a pair of kills. The Penmen were still in good shape when they were up, 18-14, but an 11-2 rush – with five kills from Rachel Priore, leapt California (Pa.) to the win, which pulled it even at 1-1.
- The Vulcans took a 2-1 lead when they led, 19-15, in set No. 3 before three aces from Shelby Alloway carried a 6-0 spurt that won them the set.
- Cal (Pa.) led, 5-4, in the fourth when it scored seven of the next eight points, as part of a 20-8 match-clinching stretch.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- SNHU turned in a higher hitting percentage in the opening set, but was outhit by the Vulcans for the match, .197-.115
- The Penmen again held the advantage on the defensive side with a 14-9 margin in blocks.
NOTES
- This was the first meeting between the two squads.
UP NEXT
- SNHU plays Indiana (Pa.) University (11 a.m.) and Mercyhurst University (6 p.m.) on Saturday to close out the Vulcan Invitational.
- The next home match for Southern New Hampshire is Saturday, Sept. 15 (1 p.m.) when it plays host to Assumption College in Northeast-10 action.
