BOX SCORE

When and Where: April 11, 2017 – Springfield, Mass. (Abdow Field)
Score: No. 16 Southern New Hampshire University 17, American International College 6
Records: SNHU 7-3 (5-3 Northeast-10 Conference), AIC 0-14 (0-9 Northeast-10)

Junior Corey Cairo (Wading River, N.Y.) and senior Keifer Heckman (Peabody, Mass.) each registered six points, as No. 16 Southern New Hampshire University returned to the win column on Tuesday with a 17-6 victory over American International College in Northeast-10 Conference men's lacrosse action at Abdow Field.

Cairo led the Penmen attack with four goals and two assists, while Heckman added three of each. Senior Daniel Trainor (Billerica, Mass.) totaled four points on a hat trick and a helper, and junior Devin Calkins (Bow, N.H.) scored once and set up two other goals.

Heckman sparked Southern New Hampshire with a hat trick in the first 11:18 of the contest. He opened the game's scoring midway through the quarter off a feed from Calkins, and after the Yellow Jackets tied things up, Heckman added his second of the frame on the man advantage from Trainor with 5:36 to go. Heckman completed his hat trick with just under four minutes remaining with help from Cairo, and the Penmen closed out the quarter with a Trainor marker in the final minute to hold a 4-1 edge through one.

The score remained unchanged through the first half of the second quarter before Heckman set up Cairo's first of the evening at 7:15. An AIC goal with 5:28 to go in the half trimmed the Southern New Hampshire lead back to three, but junior Mark Beirne (Hooksett, N.H.) reestablished the four-goal cushion 29 seconds later. In similar fashion to the first quarter, the Penmen found the back of the net with under a minute to play, this time it was Cairo with 33 seconds left, and SNHU took a 7-2 lead into the break.

Cairo and Heckman went back to work in the early stage of the third, as the latter found the former 1:42 into the second half to balloon the lead to six at 8-2. Back-to-back Yellow Jacket goals at 3:26 and 4:55 cut their deficit down to four, but a four-goal Penmen run to close the quarter, highlighted by two Trainor tallies, sent the game to the fourth with SNHU in front, 12-4.

Junior Khyan Gaddy (Albany, N.Y) continued the scoring burst for Southern New Hampshire in the fourth with a man-down goal a mere 1:07 into the period. Senior Zach Jacobs (Tewksbury, Mass.) and sophomore Tom Schutz (Trumbull, Conn.) put the spurt to seven goals with strikes at 2:20 and 6:11, which expanded the lead to 11 goals, before AIC was able to answer back with 4:17 left in regulation. Junior Chris West (Albany, N.Y.) buried his fifth of the year with just over three minutes to go before Schutz added his second of the night at 13:23. The Yellow Jackets netted the final score of the night with 1:07 remaining to provide the final margin of scoring.

Senior Tyler Walsh (Northampton, Mass.) earned the win in the Penmen cage with six saves in the game's first 47:27 before turning things over to junior Michael Brawley (Tewksbury, Mass.). Sophomore Andrew Liu (Piedmont, Calif.) won six of his eight trips to the X, and he combined with senior Patrick Goff (Nashua, N.H.) and junior Bryan Daly (Woburn, Mass.) to win 13 faceoffs for Southern New Hampshire.

Notes:
- The Penmen outshot AIC, 55-24, which included a 38-12 advantage in shots on goal. Southern New Hampshire also won the groundball battle (24-19) and converted on 22 of its 25 clear attempts.
- Heckman's third goal of the first quarter was the 96th of his career. He is now No. 10 on the Penmen men's lacrosse all-time goal scoring list.
- With six points on Saturday, Heckman moves into a tie with Bob Champey for No. 14 on the Penmen men's lacrosse all-time scoring list with 132 career points. Heckman has one or more points in 37 of his last 40 outings, and of those 37 games, he has at least two points in 33 contests.
