Women's Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision at Saint Anselm

Freshman Amanda Costales (Wantagh, N.Y.) recorded six kills on .417 hitting, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team fell to crosstown rival Saint Anselm College, 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-15, 25-13) Tuesday evening at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.

Saint Anselm jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the opening set before an 8-4 run – highlighted by a pair of service aces from freshman Jessie Leclerc (Englewood, Fla.) – trimmed the Southern New Hampshire deficit to 10-9. SNHU was within 20-18 when the Hawks reeled off five of the final six points to take the set and a 1-0 lead in the match.

The tightly-contested second set was knotted at 23-all when a service ace from junior Marisa Coronis (Hudson, N.H.) and a kill by classmate Carolyn Scacchi (Peabody, Mass.) evened the match at one.

The Penmen held an early 3-2 edge in the third set when Saint Anselm notched seven straight to open up a 9-3 lead. SNHU then climbed within 14-11 before the Hawks ripped off another six-in-a-row to seize a 20-11 advantage and cruise to a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth set, Saint Anselm held a 14-11 lead and then closed the set on an 11-2 run to clinch the match.

Senior Megan Salamun (Scottsdale, Ariz.) led the team with nine kills, while Coronis added seven kills, three service aces and a trio of digs. Senior Victoria Wehrmann (Dallas, Texas) posted six kills, with freshman Jaclyn Maguire (Rochester, N.Y.) recording five kills and 12 digs. Classmate Joanne Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) dished 31 assists and collected eight digs, while junior Kathleen Schurman (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) tallied 15 digs.

Notes:
-Southern New Hampshire outhit Saint Anselm, .368-.216 in the second set, but the Hawks held a .320-.131 advantage for the match.
-Saint Anselm has won eight straight.
-The victory gives Saint Anselm an early 4-2 lead in the Queen City Cup.

The Penmen return to action Tuesday, Oct. 11 (7 p.m.) when they take on Saint Michael's College. The next home match for SNHU is Saturday, Oct. 15 (7 p.m.) when it plays host to Merrimack College at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
