MANSFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore Philipp Herrmann (Bruckmuehl, Germany) of the Southern New Hampshire University men's soccer team was selected as the NE10 Player of the Week and graduate student Rafa Escobedo (Santander, Spain) earned NE10 Defensive Player of the Week honors, both for the period ending Sept. 17, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
In the third week of awards, the Penmen have now had two different NE10 Players of the Week and three different Defensive Players of the Week.
Herrmann scored two goals during a 1-0-1 week for the 10th-ranked Penmen, with both tallies coming in a 2-0 victory over Adelphi University in the NE10 opener Saturday. Herrmann kicked off the scoring with a penalty kick goal late in the eighth minute and struck again in the 23rd minute.
Escobedo played a big role on the back line, as the defense limited opponents to just one goal on nine shots during the week. The SNHU defense clamped down in the win against Adelphi, as the Penmen outshot the Panthers, 19-0. Escobedo also collected an assist on Herrmann's second goal against Adelphi.
In six matches, Herrmann has three goals and an assist for seven points, and is tied for third in the NE10 in both goals and points. Escobedo has collected a pair of assists and is tied for third in the conference in that category.
Herrmann, Escobedo and the Penmen are back in action Wednesday (Sept. 20) at 4 p.m. when they take on cross-town rival Saint Anselm College.
