MANSFIELD, Mass. – Eight student-athletes from Southern New Hampshire University collected NE10 Academic All-Conference accolades for the 2022-23 winter season Wednesday.
The eight selections are tied for the third most in the league. However, SNHU only sponsors four of the seven winter sports in the NE10; only one other institution sponsors fewer. Bentley University led the way with 15 honorees, while Southern Connecticut State University had 12. Adelphi University tied the Penmen with eight. Bentley, Southern Connecticut and Adelphi all sponsor six of the seven NE10 winter sports – two more than SNHU. Furthermore, SNHU's 2:1 ratio of NE10-Academic-All-Conference-honorees-to-number-of-sports-sponsored is tied for the league lead with SCSU.
SNHU placed a league-high four student-athletes on the 15-member women's indoor track & field field team. Graduate student Ashley Corcoran (East Longmeadow, Mass.), and juniors Ava Gravell (Windham, N.H.), Emma Hallet (Billerica, Mass.) and Kelsey Seamans (Methuen, Mass.) earned the honor for the Penmen, who captured the program's first NE10 title in February.
Corcoran is one of three, out of the 73 student-athletes honored across the NE10, to earn the accolade for the third time. Corcoran, who posted a 3.81 grade-point average as an undergraduate and now has a perfect 4.0, while pursuing her Master's degree in Business Administration with a concentration in marketing, adds to her impressive list of accomplishments this season. She was recognized as United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) East All-Region in five different events (mile, 800m, 3000m, 5000m, DMR), and was named both the NE10 Most Valuable Athlete and NE10 Most Outstanding Track Performer following her performance at the NE10 Championships, which saw her capture individual titles in the mile (5:03.77), 3000m (10:40.80) and 5000m (18:40.96). Corcoran qualified for the NCAA National Championship in the mile, leading for more than half the race, before finishing eighth in 4:55.13.
Corcoran competed in seven meets during the season, also winning the 800 at the Panther Invitational I with a personal best time of 2:18.00, finishing second in the 1000m at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAA) Championships with a personal best of 2:52.57, and claimed another personal best in the mile at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational (4:48.18). Corcoran, the Jan. 24 NE10 Track Athlete of the Week, previously received the NE10 Academic All-Conference nod for women's indoor track & field in 2021 and 2022, in addition to being selected as the NE10 Sport Excellence Award winner for women's indoor track & field last season.
Gravell, a biology major with a 3.97 GPA, earned USTFCCCA East All-Region honors in the 400m. She took part in eight meets and set five personal bests, including at the USM II meet on Jan. 7, when she won the 55m in a time of 7.48. The other four PRs all came at the NE10 Championships, where Gravell was second in the 400m (57.08), third in the 60m prelims (7.97), fifth in the long jump (5.40) and sixth in the 200m (25.61).
