Baseball's Bats Continue to Bash in Sweep of Saint Rose

Junior Nick Schwartz (Massapequa, N.Y.) went 4-for-7 and knocked in five runs, as the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team beat the College of Saint Rose twice Tuesday at Penmen Field. SNHU defeated Saint Rose, 10-2, in the opener and then came back in the nightcap to record a 15-3 victory in seven innings.

KEY MOMENTS – GAME 1
  • Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Moreno started the scoring by launching a two-run home run to right-center, before the Penmen scored two more unearned runs when freshman Dyrenson Wouters (Oranjestad, Aruba) reached on a two-out error and redshirt-junior Cristian Mercedes (Providence, R.I.) drew a bases-loaded walk.
  • After a Tony Socci homer put Saint Rose on the board in the top of the third, the Penmen answered with three in the home half. Lavigne lined a solo shot down the left field line to get the run back, with Moreno plating two more on a two-out, two-run single to center that made it 7-1.
  • An RBI single through the left side in the fourth from Lavigne nudged the lead to 8-1, with a two-out, two-run double to left-center from Schwartz extending the Penmen advantage to 10-1 in the fifth.
  • The Golden Knights tacked on a run in the top of the eighth.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – GAME 1
  • Lavinge finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, a run scored, a home run and a walk.
  • Moreno went 2-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, a home run and a walk.
  • Schwartz was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, a run scored and a double.
  • Junior Cam Caraher (Plymouth, Mass.) was 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and a run scored.
  • Rivera (two runs, two walks, three steals), Mercedes (RBI, run, walk, two steals) and junior Mike La Rocca (Vero Beach, Fla.; run) were all 1-for-4.
  • Vargas Segura went 1-for-1.
  • Junior Albert Cuello-Batista (Manchester, N.H.) hit two batters in a hitless inning of work.
KEY MOMENTS – GAME 2
  • Schwartz gave SNHU a 1-0 lead in the first with an RBI double to right-center and then scored after moving to third on a wild pitch and the catcher threw the ball into left field.
  • Saint Rose tied it in the second on a two-run homer by James Ward, but the Penmen answered with a four-run second. An RBI single up the middle from Rivera and a two-out, two-run double off the bat of Schwartz did the bulk of the damage.
  • A Jack McDonald solo shot in the third pulled the Golden Knights within 6-3.
  • SNHU scored four more in the third, with a two-run single up the middle from Vargas Segura and a two-out, two-run bomb to center from Risedorf stretching the lead to 10-3.
  • Wouters joined the party with a two-run homer to center in the fourth, before Risedorf's RBI infield single made it 13-3.
  • An RBI double to right-center from sophomore Jorge Burgos (Santo Domingo, D.R.) and a Mercedes RBI single through the right side made up a two-run fifth that brought the score to 15-3.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – GAME 2
  • Risedorf (three RBI, run, HR, walk) and Pisano (two run, double, walk) were both 2-for-2.
  • Schwartz finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, a run and two doubles.
  • Rivera (RBI, run, double, two steals) and Mercedes (RBI, run) were both 2-4.
  • Wouters (two RBI, three runs) and Vargas Segura (two RBI, two runs, walk) went 1-for-2.
  • Burgos was 1-for-1 with an RBI, a run scored and a double.
  • Anderson did not record an at bat, but walked twice and scored a pair of runs.
  • Freshman Austin Trumpour (Jensen Beach, Fla.) started and allowed two runs on one hit over an inning-and-two-thirds, while striking out three and walking three.
  • Graduate student Zachary Gitschier (Lowell, Mass.) twirled a pair of scoreless innings, giving up just one hit, while fanning a pair and walking only one.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire, receiving votes in both the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Top 25 and Collegiate Baseball Division II Poll, has now won 14-in-a-row.
  • Saint Rose leads the all-time series with SNHU, 27-23, but the Penmen have won 12 straight, with the last Golden Knight's win in the series coming March 11, 2011 (8-7). SNHU has also captured five straight against Saint Rose at home, last losing there April 18, 2010 (11-2).
  • The Penmen continue to produce at the plate, having scored 312 runs in 33 games (9.5).
  • Schwartz is now leading the NE10 in hitting (.440) and RBI (40), while tied for fifth in home runs (6) 
  • The home runs for Moreno, Lavigne, Risedorf and Wouters were the first of their careers.
  • Rivera has hit safely in 18 of his last 19, including 11 straight.
  • La Rocca has a hit in seven of his last eight, including six-in-a-row.
