Men's Hoop Drains 18 3's En Route to 80-52 Win Over New Haven

Penmen earn fifth straight victory with win versus first-place Chargers

Sophomore Jordan Brathwaite (Silver Spring, Md.) poured in a career-high 24 points on perfect shooting from the field, as the Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team won its fifth straight game with an 80-52 victory against the first-place University of New Haven on Tuesday evening at the Stan Spirou Field House.

  • Junior Matt Becht (Vienna, Va.) – 20 points (6-13 FG, 5-10 3-FG, 3-4 FT), 3 rebounds, 4 assists
  • Sophomore Ethan Okwuosa (No. Haven, Conn.) – 11 points (4-17 FG, 3-8 3-FG), 7 rebounds, 4 assists
  • Graduate student Ryan Layman (Wrentham, Mass.) – 9 points (4-5 FG, 1-1 3-FG), 3 rebounds, 4 assists
KEY MOMENTS
  • Southern New Hampshire led by two with 3:50 remaining in the opening half when an 8-0 burst – with four points coming from Becht – gave it a 30-20 lead with 1:44 on the clock. The Penmen would bring a 33-24 advantage to the locker room.
  • SNHU would score eight straight as part of a 13-3 blitz to begin the second half. Becht contributed eight points during the stretch, which expanded the host lead to 46-27 just 4:38 in.
  • The margin was 20 with 5:21 left when a the Penmen ripped off a 14-4 run – led by six points from Brathwaite – to open their largest lead of the night at 79-49 with 1:36 to go.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Sophomore Derrick Grant (Plainfield, N.J.) posted five points (2-5 FG, 1-2 3-FG) and three blocks.
  • Sophomore Evan Guillory (Springfield, Mo.) netted four points (2-7 FG), grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds and dished four assists.
  • SNHU outshot New Haven, 46.8 percent (29-62) to 31 percent (18-58), including 52.9 percent (18-34) to 15.4 percent (4-26) from downtown.
  • The Chargers were plus-8 from the line, going 12-for-18 (66.7%), while the Penmen were 4-for-6 (66.7%).
  • The Penmen collected more points off turnovers (10-1) and featured a much more impressive assist-to-turnover ratio (19/4-8/8), while the Chargers narrowly won the glass (38-37), captured the paint (24-14), gathered more second chance points (18-13) and scored more on the fast break (7-1).
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire has now captured five straight and six of its last nine.
  • SNHU now leads the all-time series with New Haven, 51-27. The two teams have split the last eight meetings, while the Penmen have won three of the last four at home.
  • The 18 3-pointers were one shy of the program record of 19, which was set Nov. 19, 2019 at Mercy College.

  • The Penmen are back in action Saturday, Jan. 14 (3 p.m.) when they take on Le Moyne College.
  • The next home contest for SNHU is Wednesday, Jan. 18 (7:30 p.m.) when it plays host to cross-town rival Saint Anselm College at the Stan Spirou Field House in a game that will air live on WGIR 610-AM and Fox Sports 930-AM.
