(West Haven, Conn.) - SNHU softball wrapped up the regular season with a doubleheader sweep at New Haven Saturday by scores of 5-2 and 7-6. The Penmen finish in fourth place in the NE10, and will earn a bye in the first round of next week's championship. Sophomore Leine McKechnie (Passadumkeag, Maine) went the distance in the circle in the opener, and senior Emily Carbonneau (Lowell, Mass.) homered and drove in six runs on the day.
GAME 1 – SNHU 5-2
- McKechnie finished with seven innings pitched, allowing two earned runs. She gave up six hits, walked one and struck out three to improve to 9-6.
- Junior Bryn Garczynski (Norwood, Mass.) and sophomore Shannon Gifford (Goffstown, N.H.) started the game with singles. Carbonneau reached on an error as Garczynski scored.
- In the top of the second, a single by sophomore Bella Dickinson (Lowell, Mass.) and a double by junior Abi Gray (Litchfield, N.H.) made it 2-0. Gray scored on a single by Garczynski.
- New Haven hit the board in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by Iovanna Hillman.
- The Penmen would push the lead back to three runs in the top of the fifth when Dickinson reached on an error allowing a run to score for a 4-1 lead.
- Graduate student Chloe Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) homered in the fifth to put the Penmen on top 5-2.
- Carbonneau knocked in another run with a ground out in the top of the seventh inning.
GAME 2 –
SNHU 7-6
- The Penmen were in cruise control, up 7-1, before the Chargers rallied to make it a game. Freshman Gwyn Hammond (Los Angeles, Calif.) picked up the final six outs for her third save. Senior Jessica Johnston (Brussles, Ontario), making her sixth start in the circle, earned her first win, going the first five innings.
- Carbonneau homered in the first inning, a two-run shot, to make it 2-0. It was her team-leading seventh of the season.
- Gifford had an RBI double and Carbonneau and RBI single in a three-run top of the third that extended the lead to 5-1.
- RBI singles by sophomore Alyssa Dimauro (Chester, N.H.) and Carbonneau made it 7-1 in the top of the fourth inning.
- Hillman hit a three run-run homer for the Chargers in the bottom of the fifth as they closed to 7-5, and Mya Case homered in the seventh.
NOTES
- The Penmen secured a playoff spot with a tie at Southern Connecticut on Friday. With two wins Saturday, they finish in fourth place in the conference.
- SNHU will to head to Adelphi University (NE10 host site) for the Championship, and will meet the winner of a Tuesday clash between #5 Pace University and #8 Southern Connecticut.
- The Penmen offense came alive late in the season, scoring 72 runs over the final nine games of the season. SNHU went 7-1-1 in those contests.
- The Chargers lead the all-time series between the teams 32-16, although SNHU has won five of the last six.

- The Penmen will compete Thursday, May 5 in an NE10 Conference Quarterfinal game.
