Mercer Earns First SNHU Shutout in 3-0 Win over Saint Anselm

Penmen take opener of weekend set with Hawks

After losing in the Stovepipe Tournament Championship, the Penmen get back on the winning side of things with a shutout over Saint Anselm Friday by a score of 3-0. Between the posts, it was the graduate student Adam Mercer (Belchertown, MA) getting credit for the shutout with 23 saves.

KEY MOMENTS
 
  • First goal of the game scored 2:02 into the 1st period by Sophomore Connor Ball (Webster, NY). Gets initial shot blocked, but gets own rebound and fires into the top right side. Assisted by Junior Derek Flynn (Dracut, MA).
  • 5:40 2nd period Freshman Brendan Lynch (Nepean, ONT) called for interference. Saint Anselm gets 2 shots with the advantage but the SNHU penalty kill keeps them scoreless.
  • 6:06 3rd period Penmen get some insurance after a goal scored by Matt Amante. Assisted by Tim Usalis and sophomore Ryan Clear (Cherry Hill, NJ).
  • 15:37 3rd period James Nash scores on a PP after skating with the puck in front of the net before tucking it in on the right side. Assisted by sophomore Jack Gray (Lowell, MA), and Zachary Smith.

  • The Penmen outshot the Hawks 33-23 for the contest.
  • SNHU went 1-for-3 on the power play.  The Hawks were 0-for-4.
  • Saint Anselm won 44 faceoffs opposed to SNHU's 22
 
NOTES
  • Mercer recorded his first career SNHU shutout.  He also had a shutout as a freshman in 2018-19 for Norwich University against Johnson & Wales.
  • The Penmen and Hawks have split the first two games of the four which will be played against one another this season.  Saint Anselm leads the all-time series 12-39-1. 
WHAT'S NEXT
  • SNHU and Saint Anselm will meet again on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at Sullivan Arena.
  • After the holiday break, SNHU will next play at The Ice Den Arena on Friday, January 6 at 7:30 p.m. against Saint Anselm.
