Women's Hoop Rides Fast Start to 70-51 Win Over Franklin Pierce

Sophomore Jess Knight (Hanover, Mass.) netted 18 points to help lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team to a 70-51 non-conference victory against Franklin Pierce University on Sunday afternoon at the Stan Spirou Field House.

  • Senior Adriana Timberlake (Braintree, Mass.) – 11 points (3-12 FG, 1-7 3-FG, 4-4 FT), 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals
  • Junior Julia Colby (So. Paris, Maine) – 9 points (3-7 FG, 1-2 3-FG, 2-3 FT), 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal
KEY MOMENTS
  • Southern New Hampshire scored the first eight points of the contest and later scored seven straight to grab a 20-6 advantage with 3:24 left in the opening quarter. SNHU would lead, 26-10, at the end of one.
  • Franklin Pierce opened the second quarter with nine straight, holding the Penmen scoreless for the opening 5:46 and without a field goal for the first 7:20. Southern New Hampshire would awaken, however, closing the first half with a 15-2 counter-run to bring a 41-21 advantage into the locker room. Timberlake and Roy each scored four points during the stretch.
  • A 7-2 spurt later in the third quarter – capped by back-to-back buckets from sophomore Sydney DeVries (Monson, Mass.) – would give SNHU its largest lead of the afternoon at 59-33 with 34 seconds left.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Graduate student Mia Roy (Bedford, N.H.) tallied eight points (2-8 FG, 2-5 3-FG, 2-4 FT), three assists and three steals.
  • Freshman Emily Greenwood (Manchester, N.H.) recorded a career-best seven points (2-3 FG, 1-2 3-FG, 2-4 FT), four rebounds and two steals.
  • Freshman Meghan Gordon (Attleboro, Mass.) registered six points (1-3 FG, 4-4 FT), three rebounds, two assists and a block.
  • Senior Ariana Koivisto (Pomfret, Conn.) posted five points (2-5 FG, 1-2 3-FG), six boards, two assists, two blocks and a steal.
  • DeVries chipped in four points (2-4 FG) and five rebounds.
  • SNHU narrowly outshot Franklin Pierce, 37.9 percent (22-58) to 36.7 percent (22-60), including 31.6 percent (6-19) to 13.3 percent (2-35) from beyond the arc.
  • The Penmen were also plus-15 from the line, despite FPU shooting it better, 83.3 percent (5-6) to 71.4 percent (20-28).
  • The Penmen won the glass (38-34), scored more points off turnovers (19-11), gathered more second chance points (16-4), scored more points on the fast break (8-2), received more scoring from their bench (19-2) and featured a more impressive assist-to-turnover ratio (19/12-15/19). The Ravens captured the paint (36-30).
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire has won six of its last seven, including five straight.
  • Franklin Pierce leads the all-time series, 59-35, despite SNHU having now won 13 of the last 14 meetings, including nine straight. The Penmen have also won nine straight at home against the Ravens dating back to Dec. 4, 2013. The last Franklin Pierce win in the series came Feb. 15, 2017 (76-69) in Rindge, while the last time the Ravens beat SNHU in Manchester was Feb. 13, 2013 (73-62).
  • Knight had her streak of four straight double-doubles snapped.
  • Knight has scored in double figures in all nine games this season.
  • Timberlake, who has scored 10 or more points in seven of eight contests this year, is in the midst of a five-game, double-digit scoring streak, during which, she is netting 18.0 ppg.

  • The Penmen return to action Thursday, Dec. 29 (5 p.m.) when they take on St. Thomas Aquinas College.
  • SNHU is back home Saturday, Dec. 31 (1:30 p.m.) when it plays host to Assumption University at the Field House.
