Redshirt-junior Marcus Chavez (Queens, N.Y.) went 1-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs to tie the game in the fifth inning, but the 14th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team dropped a 6-4 decision to second-ranked Colorado Mesa University on Saturday afternoon at Suplizio Field.

KEY MOMENTS
- Trailing, 3-0, in the top of the fifth inning, Southern New Hampshire pulled even with a three-spot. A leadoff double from Mulcay, followed by an infield single from Diaz Jr. and a walk to Goldstein, loaded the bases with one out. Mercedes came through with an RBI single to center, before Chavez tied the game with a two-out, two-run single to center.
- With the game still tied, 4-4, Colorado Mesa went ahead for good on a two-out RBI double down the left field line from Jonathan Gonzalez. The Mavericks tacked on an unearned insurance run in the seventh when a pop-up that should have ended the inning was dropped and allowed a run to score.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Senior Jake Coro (Johnston, R.I.) went 1-for-5.
- Redshirt-junior Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) started and allowed five runs - four earned - on nine hits, while striking out four and not walking a batter, over five-and-two-thirds innings.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire begins the season 0-2 for the first time since 2015.
- Gomes was making his 19th career appearance for the Penmen, but started for the first time.
