Graduate student Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) returned to the singles lineup and clinched the match with his win at No. 6, as the 49th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team extended its winning streak to nine with a 6-1 victory against Le Moyne College on Saturday at the Penmen Stadium Tennis Courts.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

  • Marreiros defeated Sven Gopfrich, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 6 singles to clinch the match for the Penmen.
  • Grad student Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) posted a 6-4, 6-7 (0-7), 10-7 win at No. 1 against Tom Jarry. He also teamed with freshman Emmanuel Vacalares (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines) for a 6-4 No. 3 doubles victory over Xavier Graells and Andres Hernandez.
  • Vacalares was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 3 singles against Hernandez.
  • Junior Willem van Biezen (Sassenheim, The Netherlands) pulled out a tough first set to defeat Philip Blythe, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, at No. 2 singles, in addition to combining with classmate Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, The Netherlands) to edge Jarry and Blythe, 7-5, at No. 1 doubles.
  • Grad student Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) also won both his matches, topping Christian Erickson, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 5 singles, while breezing past Gerardo Wibmer and Tyler Underwood, 6-1, with freshman Fernando Torres (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) at No. 2 doubles.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Marreiros and Torres began the match with their doubles win before Fernandes and Vacalares clinched the point. The van Biezens then made it a clean sweep to put the Penmen up, 1-0.
  • Vacalares began singles play out on the right foot, with Miguel Marreiros following to make it 3-0.
  • Ricardo Marreiros then clinched the victory with his win in his first singles match since Feb. 2.
  • Le Moyne made it onto the board as Graells outlasted Bas van Biezen, 5-7, 7-5, 10-3, at No. 4 singles.
  • Willem van Biezen and Fernandes capped the match with wins.

NOTES

  • Southern New Hampshire, which has won nine straight, is ranked 49th in the ITA Division II Poll and fourth in the ITA East Region, while Le Moyne is sixth in the region.
  • SNHU is now 4-0 this season against regionally-ranked opponents.
  • The Penmen had won four-in-a-row by a 7-0 score entering the day and lose a point for the first time since March 30.
  • SNHU extends its NE10 winning streak, including the postseason, to 42 dating back to Oct. 15, 2015.
  • Fernandes improves to 43-0 all-time against NE10 foes in singles action, including the postseason and ITA East Regional Championship tournaments.
  • The set Fernandes dropped was just the fifth of his career against an NE10 opponent and marks the first time he has ever played back-to-back three-set matches against a conference foe.
  • Bas van Biezen had his perfect all-time singles record against NE10 rivals blemished for the first time at 17-1.
  • Fernandes, the Marreiros' and Faizan Khalid (Manchester, N.H.) were honored in a Senior Day ceremony prior to the match.
