Sophomore Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) dropped just one game in both of his matches, combined, as the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team shut out Franklin Pierce University, 9-0, Monday afternoon at the SNHU Tennis Courts at Penmen Stadium.
Seniors Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) and Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) jump-started the eventual victory with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles against Yuval Barak and Marcus Lawrence, before van Biezen and graduate student Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) matched the same 8-1 score at No. 1 versus Roberto Chong and Andrew Schadt. Seniors Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal.) and Jeremy Reichentahl (Cheshire, Conn.) then made it a clean sweep of doubles with an 8-4 victory against James Bisazza and Matthew Toombs at No. 3.
Aubron was ahead, 6-1, 2-0, at No. 4 singles when Schadt was forced to retire and put the Penmen one win away from taking the match. They earned it when Reichentahl handed Toombs a 6-2, 6-2 loss at No. 6.
Van Biezen then continued his torrid stretch of play by shutting down Lawrence, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5, with Miguel Marreiros breezing past Barak, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 3 to push the score to 6-0.
Fernandes posted a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Chong at No. 1, before Ricardo Marreiros rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 10-5 win at No. 2 to cap the match.
Notes:
-Southern New Hampshire, which has now won six-in-a-row, extends its NE10 winning streak, including the postseason, to 29.
-van Biezen, who is 17-2 on the season in singles play, has won 15 of 16, including 11 straight.
-The Penmen are ranked No. 4 in the ITA Division II East Regional Rankings.
