Junior Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) and freshman Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) each won a pair of matches, but the fourth-seeded Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team was edged by fifth-seeded Post University, 5-4, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Queens (N.Y.) College Tennis Center.
Aubron and van Biezen posted an 8-2 victory over Peter Roessell and Joe Alvord at No. 3 doubles to salvage a win for the Penmen as they entered singles play trailing, 2-1.
Junior Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) took care of business at No. 2 singles against Ivan Rajevac with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Aubron breezed to a 6-0, 6-3 triumph against Samuel Urban at No. 4 singles, with van Biezen notching a 7-5, 6-2 victory against Roessel at No. 5.
The match came down to a pair of tiebreakers, with junior Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) dropping a 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2) decision to Nikola Crvelin at No. 1 singles and classmate Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) falling to Ludvig Henrikson at No. 3, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5).
Notes:
-The loss snapped a 10-match winning streak for Southern New Hampshire, which was coming off its second straight Northeast-10 Championship title.
-The Penmen, who have their entire roster back next year, were making their sixth NCAA appearance.
-Fernandes and Ricardo Marreiros, who suffered an 8-3 No. 1 doubles lost to Crvelin and Henrikson, had entered the day a perfect 10-0 together as doubles partners this season.
-SNHU defeated Post, 9-0, during the regular season back on Oct. 16.
