Graduate student Zach Goldstein (Merrick, N.Y.) hit a grand slam, and redshirt-junior Ryan Sullivan (Hopkinton, Mass.) and sophomore Robert Fulkerson (Anaheim, Calif.) each crushed three-run homers as the sixth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team posted a 15-5 victory against Saint Michael's College on Wednesday afternoon at Doc Jacobs Field.
Southern New Hampshire wasted no time putting a run on the board as freshman Tom Blandini (Bow, N.H.) singled to right with one out in the first, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a fly out to right from redshirt-sophomore John Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) before scoring on a two-out single to right by senior Derek Bauer (Millis, Mass.).
The Penmen loaded the bases in the second as sophomore Joshua Zbierski (Stafford Springs, Conn.) singled before juniors Kyle Pangallo (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Sean Webster (Boston, Mass.) were plunked. That brought up Goldstein, who crushed the first pitch he saw to left for a grand slam that made it 5-0.
Saint Michael's began to scratch its way back into it in the third as a two-out RBI double down the left field line by Drew Salk, followed by a run-scoring single to center from PJ Jasak, trimmed the deficit to 5-2.
The score stayed that way until the top of the seventh when SNHU broke it open. Goldstein walked, stole second and came around to score on Blandini's base knock through the right side. Blandini then swiped second and went to third on a wild pitch, but was cut down trying to score on Stanton's grounder to third. After Bauer walked to put a pair on with two out, Sullivan swatted a three-run bomb to left-center that widened the gap to 9-2.
The Purple Knights grabbed two back against junior starter Ivon Clough (Dublin, N.H.) in the home half on an RBI double to right-center by Dan Flynn and Joe Robertson's sacrifice fly to right.
Saint Michael's then threatened against the Penmen bullpen in the eighth, putting a pair on with one out, but redshirt-freshman Shane Reardon (Kinnelon, N.J.) was able to escape the jam and keep it a five-run game.
Southern New Hampshire broke it open for good in the ninth as it sent 12 to the plate and scored six times. Redshirt-freshman Joshua Goldstein (Haverhill, Mass.) reached on an error and sophomore Nick Camilleri (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) walked before Fulkerson blasted a three-run shot to right that made it 12-4. Freshman Ethan Harris (Middleton, Mass.) then singled to third and graduate student Dave Hoffman (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and freshman Phoenix Hernandez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) walked to load the bases. Zach Goldstein, Joshua Goldstein and redshirt-sophomore Kevin Alexy (Newton, Mass.) all then drew two-out walks to bring three runs that ballooned the lead to 15-4.
Saint Michael's added one in the bottom of the ninth as Steven Auger hit an inside-the-park home run to left.
Clough (4-0) allowed four runs on six hits, while striking out four and walking four, over seven innings. Reardon worked a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while striking out one and walking one. Sophomore Mike Pineda-O'Donnell (Pennington, N.J.) relinquished a run on a hit in an inning of work.
Zach Goldstein finished 1-for-4 with two walks, five RBI and a run scored, while Sullivan was also 1-for-4 with three RBI and a run. Blandini went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run, with Zbierski going 2-for-2 with a walk and a run. Bauer (walk, RBI, run) and Pangallo (run) were each 1-for-3.
Notes:
- SNHU has now won 18 of its last 21, including 11 of 13 and eight of nine.
- Goldstein's grand slam was the first of his career, as well as his second long ball of the season.
