Score: Southern New Hampshire University 3, Adelphi University 2
Records: SNHU 7-10 (3-5 NE10), Adelphi 8-11 (4-3 NE10)
Senior Marisa Coronis (Hudson, N.H.) pounded out 16 kills and junior Jessica Dillon (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) recorded a triple-double to lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team to a come-from-behind, 3-2 victory (17-25, 23-25, 25-21, 27-25, 15-8) at Adelphi University on Friday night at the Center for Recreation and Sports.
Coronis added 10 digs and two service aces to her stat line, while Dillon tallied 12 kills, 23 assists, 18 digs, three service aces and two blocks. Junior Priscila Castro (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) notched a double-double of 10 kills and 18 digs, with sophomore Amanda Costales (Wantagh, N.Y.) racking up 11 kills on .400 hitting, to go with six digs and three stuffs.
Adelphi held a 13-11 lead in the first set when a 10-3 rush opened its advantage to 23-14. Two kills from Dillon and one from Coronis trimmed the Southern New Hampshire deficit to 24-17, but a Victoria Cast kill ended the set and gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the match.
Adelphi was up 24-21 in set No. 2, when a pair of attack errors pulled the Penmen within 24-23, before another Cast kill made it 2-0, in favor of the hosts.
Trailing, 17-16, in the third set, a kill and two service aces from Dillon sparked an 8-3 run that pushed the Penmen in front, 24-20. After an error made it a three-point score, Castro kept SNHU alive with a kill that made it 2-1 in the match.
Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth set before an 11-1 blitz catapulted Adelphi in front, 12-5. Three kills from Coronis highlighted a 9-2 counter-run that pulled the Penmen even at 14-14. With the set tied at 19-all, a pair of Dillon kills carried a 5-2 spurt that put the Penmen in front, 24-21, but four straight points would give the Panthers a 25-24 lead and put them one point from taking the match. A Coronis kill would stop that from happening, before a Dillon service ace and an Adelphi error gave SNHU the win and leveled the match, 2-2.
SNHU went out to a 3-0 lead in the deciding stanza, but Adelphi answered with four straight points to take the lead. Tied, 7-7, kills from Coronis and Costales would jump-start a 5-0 run – with two kills from each of them – to open up a 12-7 lead for the visitors. Following an Adelphi kill, a Panther error, a Coronis service ace and a kill from sophomore Jaclyn Maguire (Rochester, N.Y.) would complete the improbable comeback for the Penmen.
Maguire chipped in four kills, three digs and two blocks. Sophomore Joanne Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) posted 21 assists and 13 digs.
