Sophomore Sarah Lavallee (Candia, N.H.) fired a two-hit shutout, while senior Mo Hannan (Scarborough, Maine) and freshman Erin Garczynski (Norwood, Mass.) each belted home runs as Southern New Hampshire University topped Stonehill College, 4-0, in Northeast-10 Conference softball action at Gartland Field on Sunday.
Lavallee fanned four and walked two in a complete-game effort that upped her record to 12-4 on the season. Hannan led the offense with three hits in four trips to the plate, two RBI and a run scored. Garczynski finished 2-for-3 and sophomore Katie Horiuchi (Livingston, N.J.) collected a pair of hits and drove in a run.
After Lavallee set down the side in order in the bottom of the first, the Penmen gave her all the support she would need in the top of the second. Juniors Devan Rabidou (Ashland, Mass.) and Erin Morrissey (Commack, N.Y.) smacked back-to-back singles with one away before Horiuchi sent a base hit through the left side two batters later that brought in Rabidou. Hanna followed with an infield single to drive in Morrissey and stake the visitors to a 2-0 edge.
Lavallee made the lead stand, as she carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and allowed just one runner to reach second base. The sophomore right-hander limited the Skyhawks to a pair of two-out, fifth inning singles and held their offense in check while SNHU worked to increase its advantage.
The Penmen added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh to complete the game's scoring and build a 4-0 lead. Hannan led off the frame with her third long ball of the year, and two batters later, Garczynski blasted a solo shot for her third of 2016 to provide the final margin of victory.
Erin Brayden and Emily Padilla recorded the two hits for Stonehill while Lauren Esposito and Megan Ruonavaara worked the two walks. Sarah Ropiak fell to 9-8 after surrendering four runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
Notes:
- Hannan extended her multi-hit streak to four-straight games, and has reached base safely in 15 of her last 16 contests.
- Southern New Hampshire was perfect in the field on Sunday, and improved to 14-4 in games they commit zero errors.
