No. 20 Baseball Runs Win Streak to 11

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. – No. 20 Southern New Hampshire University rallied from an early 3-1 deficit to record a 10-5 Northeast-10 baseball victory over Saint Anselm College Tuesday night at Penmen Field.  The Penmen, who scored at least 10 runs for the fifth straight game, have now won 11 in a row and are 25-7 and 11-2 in the NE-10 Northeast Division.  The Hawks are 10-21 and 4-11 in the league.

The Penmen staked themselves to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Zach Goldstein (Merrick, N.Y.) led off with a walk, followed by a Manny Cruz (Wolcott, Conn.) single.  After an out, Mike Montville (Portsmouth, N.H.) singled through the right side to plate Goldstein and extend his hit streak to 11 games.

Saint Anselm scored three times in the third as a Mike Hayden double scored Ken Morrision and Joe Morin.  The Hawks made it 3-1 when Shaine Carpenter singled to right to bring in Hayden after he moved to third on a sacrifice bunt.  The hosts cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom half of the frame when Cruz and Carson Helms (Farmington, Conn.) led off with back-to-back walks, and a Montville single to left scored Cruz.

SNHU took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Cruz led off with a walk, followed by a Helms double.  With first base open, Saint Anselm elected to intentionally walk Montville, loading the bases for Alejandro Diaz (Old Bridge, N.J.), who lined a sac fly to center to tie the game.  One batter later, Derek Bauer (Millis, Mass.) delivered a double to the gap in right-center to make it 5-3.  The Penmen tacked on a run in the sixth when Cruz tripled with two away and scored on a Helms single.

The Hawks loaded the bases with no one out in the top of the seventh, prompting SNHU to lift starter David Gibson (Hanover, Mass.) for Jake Walkinshaw (Seymour, Conn.).  Walkinshaw got out of the inning with just one run scoring, as a strikeout, followed by back-to-back groundouts, ended the threat.  Max Wadington did score on a groundout by Hayden.  SNHU grabbed three more runs in the bottom of the frame, with back-to-back sac flies by Lorenzo Papa (Stoneham, Mass.) and Tyler Fortanascio (Oradell, N.J.), followed by a Goldstein single made it 9-4.

Southern New Hampshire scored its final run in the eighth when Helms drew a leadoff walk and after stealing second scored on a Diaz double.

Montville and Diaz had two hits apiece while driving in two runs, while Cruz and Helms also each had two hits.  Gibson improved to 5-1, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out six in six-plus innings.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Wednesday night when it hosts No. 1/3 Franklin Pierce University in a 6:00 contest at Penmen Field.  The Ravens enter the game winners of 15 straight, the nation's longest current win streak, while SNHU's 11 straight wins are the fourth-longest current win streak in Division II.
