Box Score 2 MANCHESTER, N.H. – Southern New Hampshire University took both ends of a non-conference baseball doubleheader from American International College by scores of 15-6 and 10-2 Monday at Penmen Field. The Penmen improved to 18-7 with the wins, while the Yellow Jackets are now 5-18 on the season.
In the opener, SNHU scored 14 times in the middle innings, posting five runs in the third, three in the fourth, four in the fifth and two in the sixth. The Penmen pounded out 13 hits and took advantage of five AIC errors and 13 walks by Yellow Jacket pitching.
Alejandro Diaz (Old Bridge, N.J.) and Derek Bauer (Millis, Mass.) each drove in three runs in the opener, as Diaz and Manny Cruz (Wolcott, Conn.) each had three hits. All three hit home runs, with Bauer delivering a three-run blast in the third. Zach Goldstein (Merrick, N.Y.) also had a pair of hits.
SNHU starter Joe McCarthy (Nashua, N.H.) went three-plus innings, striking out six while allowing two hits and five runs (three earned). Stephen Fortuna (Metuchen, N.J.) worked 2.2 innings of relief to earn the win, allowing two hits and one run while fanning three.
After spotting the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead in the nightcap, lefthander Tim Viehoff (Derry, N.H.) settled down to earn the win for the Penmen. He went six innings and allowed two hits while striking out nine and walking three. Lucas Olen (Bedford, N.H.) worked the seventh of the seven-inning contest.
SNHU did not get a hit until an RBI double by Montville in the fifth, but took advantage of 14 walks by Yellow Jacket pitching. The Penmen tied the game with two runs in the second, then took a 4-2 lead in the fourth before using three hits to score six times in the fifth. Cruz finished with two RBI in the nightcap and extended his hit streak to seven games.
Southern New Hampshire hosts Saint Michael's College in a 3:30 Northeast-10 doubleheader Tuesday at Penmen Field.
