No. 18 Baseball Flies Past Mercy in Twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – No. 18 Southern New Hampshire University took both ends of a non-conference baseball doubleheader from Mercy College by scores of 2-1 and 16-2 Saturday evening at the Ripken Experience.  The Penmen upped their record to 4-3 on the season, while the Mavericks now stand 0-4.

In the opener, SNHU staked itself to a 1-0 lead in the fourth when a Mike Montville (Portsmouth, N.H.) sac fly scored Zach Goldstein (Merrick, N.Y.).  Mercy tied the game in the top of the eighth when John Young scored on a passed ball, but the Penmen took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame when a Derek Bauer (Millis, Mass.) sac fly plated Alejandro Diaz (Old Bridge, N.J.).

Cole Warren (Bedford, N.H.) started and went seven innings for the Penmen, allowing just one hit, a leadoff single in the seventh.  He struck out 13 while issuing one walk.  Sam Fuller (Barre, Vt.) pitched 0.2 innings and was responsible for the tying run, while Ben Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.) worked the final 1.1 innings and picked up the victory.  Mercy had two of the game's three hits, with the lone Penmen hit a Tyler Fortanascio (Oradell, N.J.) single.

In the nightcap, SNHU got the scoring going with a five-run third inning.  The Penmen banged out 13 hits and Southern New Hampshire pitching struck out 19, including 10 by starter Joe McCarthy (Nashua, N.H.) in 3.1 innings of work.  McCarthy also issued five walks and was relieved in the fourth by Alex Person (Foxboro, Mass.), who got the win.  Person did not allow a hit in 3.2 innings, striking out six and walking one.

Diaz went 3-4 with a pair of RBI for the Penmen, while Goldstein and Carson Helms (Farmington, Conn.) each had two hits and knocked in a pair of runs.  Hector Coscione (West Newton, Mass.) belted a three-run home run in the eighth as he drove in four runs in two plate appearances.

Southern New Hampshire closes out its trip to Myrtle Beach Sunday morning when it faces the University of Bridgeport at 9:00 am.
