Box Score FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University completed a three-game series sweep of Southern New Hampshire University with a 6-3 baseball victory Sunday afternoon at the NSU Baseball Complex. The Sharks extended their best-ever start to 9-0, while the Penmen, ranked No. 11 in the NCBWA preseason poll, now stand 0-3 on the season.
Southern New Hampshire staked itself to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Carson Helms (Farmington, Conn.) delivered a solo home run to left field, his first of the season. The Sharks would threaten in the bottom of the second, loading the bases with one out, but came away with just one run to tie the game 1-1.
The Sharks took control with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, with the big blow a three-run home run by Justin Garcia. Southern New Hampshire made it 5-3 in the top of the sixth when Ryan Gendron (Nashua, N.H.) sent a two-run double to left, scoring Helms and Mike Montville (Portsmouth, N.H.). Nova Southeastern closed out the scoring in the bottom of the sixth when a groundout by Andres Visbal plated Mario Urdaneta.
Helms was 3-3 at the plate to lead Southern New Hampshire, while Montville and Gendron each had one hit as the Penmen were outhit 10-5. SNHU starter Cole Warren (Bedford, N.H.) struck out five in four innings and allowed three hits and one unearned run while walking three. Sam Fuller (Barre, Vt.) took the loss, surrendering three hits and four runs as he relieved Warren in the fifth.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Friday when it faces the University of Bridgeport and Felician College in the first two of five games of the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
