Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Senior Elijah Bonsignore (Felton, Del.) recorded a career-high 41 points as Southern New Hampshire University defeated American International College 107-104 in a wild double-overtime Northeast-10 men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Butova Gymnasium. The Penmen snap a three-game slide as they improve to 8-5 and 7-3 in the NE-10, while the Yellow Jackets saw a six-game win streak snapped and are now 10-3 and 5-2 in the league.
Bonsignore finished 16-20 (80%) from the floor and 7-11 at the free-throw line while also grabbing 15 rebounds, dishing out four assists and recording a pair of blocked shots. His 41 points are six shy of the single-game school record of 47 set by Fred Petty in 1974 and the highest total recorded in the Northeast-10 this season. It is also the third-highest single-game total in Division II in 2014-15.
Rodney Sanders (Linden, N.J.) added 24 points for the Penmen on 8-20 shooting, while Aleksandar Dobrovic (Podgorica, Montenegro) finished with a season-best 14 points on 5-8 shooting while dishing out six assists.
American International was led by Bobby Harris, who totaled 31 points on 12-22 shooting while handing out 10 assists. Marcus Porter finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Cameron Dobbs and Trahmier Burrell added 18 and 16 points, respectively.
In a game that saw 22 ties and 12 lead changes, Adrian Oliveira (Pawtucket, R.I.) broke the 22nd tie with just under a minute remaining with his three that gave the Penmen a 101-98 lead. Harris missed a layup on the other and Devin Gilligan (Amherst, N.H.) sank a pair of free throws with 27 seconds to go to give SNHU a 103-98 advantage. SNHU went 6-6 at the free-throw line in the final minute to seal the victory.
In the first overtime session, AIC held a 90-88 lead following a Al-Shabazz Jabateh three with 53 seconds to go, but a Bonsignore up-and-under layup with 37 seconds to go tied the game 90-90. Porter converted a jumper with seven seconds left, but coming out of a timeout, Bonsignore hit a long two, with his foot on the three-point arc, as time expired, to send the game to the second extra frame.
At the end of regulation, Southern New Hampshire held a 78-76 lead with 28.6 seconds left following a driving layup by Bonsignore, and after a missed Porter layup, Bonsignore was fouled. He made 1-of-2 at the line and a Harris three with 3.5 seconds to go tied the game 79-79. The Penmen were unable to get a good look, with Dobrovic firing from near half court and falling short.
The Penmen trailed 57-52 with just under nine minutes to go but five straight points by Sanders made it 57-57 with 7:49 left. The two teams traded the lead five times through the rest of regulation.
Southern New Hampshire trailed much of the first half and found itself down 10, 27-17, with just over eight minutes to go until halftime. SNHU used a 17-6 run to take a 34-33 lead on a Dobrovic layup with just under two minutes to go and went into the locker room down one, 37-36.
AIC shot 50% from the floor and was 13-27 behind the three-point arc, but went just 19-33 at the free-throw line, while the Penmen went 24-32 at the charity stripe. SNHU was just 9-27 behind the arc but shot 49.3% overall and held a 42-34 rebound advantage. Both teams took care of the ball, with the Penmen recording eight turnovers and the Yellow Jackets nine.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Tuesday night when it travels to Pace University for a 7:30 Northeast-10 contest.
