Baseball Stays Alive, Edges Wilmington (Del.) 4-3

Box Score

MANCHESTER N.H. – A three-run double by junior Mike Mastroberti (Ramsey, N.J.) highlighted a four-run top of the sixth inning for top-seeded Southern New Hampshire University as it stayed alive in the NCAA Division II baseball East Regional with a 4-3 win over No. 3 seed Wilmington (Del.) University on Saturday morning at Penmen Field.  The Penmen, 41-13 overall, advance to play No. 5 seed Dowling College, the regional's lone unbeaten, Saturday night at 7:30, while the Wildcats see their season come to a close at 35-11-1.

Trailing 3-0 after Wilmington scored three times in the bottom of the fifth (SNHU was playing as the visitor), the Penmen loaded the bases with one out as Manny Cruz (Wolcott, Conn.) walked, Al Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) singled and Riley Palmer (Goffstown, N.H.) walked.  Mastroberti sent a 3-2 pitch from Frank Samluk off the fence just to the left of the 365-foot sign to clear the bases and tie the game 3-3.  After a flyout, Mastroberti scored on a single through the left side by Tyler Fortanascio (Oradell, N.J.).

In the bottom of the fifth Joe Castro got Wilmington on the board as he worked a bases-loaded walk with two outs to  bring home Kyle Lindstrom.  At that point, SNHU coach Scott Loiseau lifted starter Cole Warren (Bedford, N.H.) for closer Benjamin Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.).  Josh Swirchak greeted Criscuolo with a hard single to center that plated two runs, but Criscuolo avoided further damage by getting Josh Hampton to fly out to center.

Criscuolo improved to 6-0 out of the pen with two hits in his 4.1 innings of work, fanning two.  Warren went 4.2 innings and allowed two hits and three unearned runs while fanning two and walking four.  Samluk took the loss for the Wildcats, allowing five hits and all four runs in his 5.1 innings.

Fortanascio and Anthony Aceto (North Providence, R.I.) each had two hits for SNHU, while Castro had two of Wilmington's four hits on the day.
