Box Score 2 MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Southern New Hampshire softball team swept Franklin Pierce Wednesday evening by scores of 13-3 and 6-4 in Northeast-10 Conference play on Penmen Field. The Penmen improve to 17-7 overall and 6-3 in conference play, while the Ravens fall to 4-14 overall and 3-8 in the league.
In the first game of the day, 11 first inning runs were the difference as SNHU went on to defeat Franklin Pierce by a score of 13-3 in five innings.
Despite falling behind 2-0 after the top of the first, the Penmen answered with 11 runs in the bottom of the inning to cruise to victory. Holly Eicher (Stoneham, Mass.) started things off when she reached first on a single, and made it around the bases on a Mo Hannan (Scarborough, Maine) double. Hannan scored after Katie Caruso (Newton, Mass.) singled up the middle to tie the game at 2-2, and a pair of Ravens' errors scored two more runs to give SNHU a 4-2 lead. The Penmen made it around to the top of the order, as Ali Maloof (Norwood, Mass.) hit an RBI single to score another run. With two outs and two on, Eicher homered to left center to score three more, and back-to-back singles closed out the scoring for the Penmen, plating two more runs to take an 11-2 lead.
After Maloof struck out two in the top of the second, the hosts were able to get a 12th run on the board in bottom of inning when Tesia Stanasek (Blackstone, Mass.) led-off with a double, and scored on another Eicher RBI.
The Penmen struck again in the third, scoring another run to go up 13-2 on Franklin Pierce. Morgan Farmer (Kingston, N.H.) doubled to left field, and was able to make it around the bases for another run.
The visitors scored one run in the top of the fifth, but it was not enough, and the Penmen took the win in five innings.
Maloof pitched five innings, totaling six strikeouts, and giving up seven hits and three runs.
In the nightcap, Southern New Hampshire defeated the Ravens by a score of 6-4.
After a scoreless first inning, the Penmen got on the board in the bottom of the second on a Lindsey Bolduc (Londonderry, N.H.) RBI single that scored Farmer for one run, and Cara Daly (Plainville, Mass.) made it around the bases after reaching on a walk to give SNHU a 2-0 lead.
However, the Ravens answered in the top of the third on a SNHU error to get on the board and cut the lead to 2-1.
Back-to-back doubles from Jessica Torsiello (Morris Plains, N.J.) and Caruso scored another run in the third inning to regain the two-run advantage over Franklin Pierce.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Southern New Hampshire scored two more runs, both unearned to go up 5-2.
The teams traded homeruns in the fifth, with Stanasek hitting her second on the season for the Penmen, and SNHU took a 6-2 lead into the sixth.
The Ravens had a chance for a comeback in the sixth after scoring two runs on a pair of singles, followed by a double from Erin Wood to cut the lead to 6-4.
But, Dolores Mattice (Schenectady, N.Y.) and the Penmen defense took care of Franklin Pierce in the final inning to hold onto the win.
Mattice went a full game in the circle totaling eight strikeouts, and allowing five hits and four runs, while Mandi Adee got the loss for the Ravens totaling two strikeouts and giving up seven Penmen hits.
The Penmen return to action Friday, April 11 when they host Merrimack for a 4:00 p.m. league game on Penmen Field.
