Box Score 1 MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Southern New University softball team split with Saint Anselm in Northeast-10 Conference action Tuesday afternoon. The Penmen are now 24-13 overall and 13-9 in the conference while the Hawks improve to 21-12 and 13-8 in league play.
In the first game of the day, the Penmen defeated Saint Anselm by a score of 6-3 in 10 innings.
Ali Maloof (Norwood, Mass.) carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning as neither team was able to get on the board in the first seven.
It was not until extra innings that the Penmen scored. In the top of the eighth, Mo Hannan (Scarborough, Maine) reached on a throwing error, and Katie Caruso (Newton, Mass.) hit her third homerun in two days to score two runs and take a 2-0 lead.
However, the Hawks answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homer of their own to tie it up at 2-2, and force a ninth inning.
In the ninth, the Penmen scored another run after Holly Eicher (Stoneham, Mass.) led-off with a bunt single, and scored on an Erin Morrissey (Commack, N.Y.) single to right field to take a 3-2 lead.
Saint Anselm answered once again in the bottom of the ninth with a solo homerun to tie it back up at 3-3 heading into the tenth.
Hannan started the inning on second base per the international rule, and was brought home on a Caruso RBI single to right center to score a run. Lindsey Bolduc (Londonderry, N.H.) then doubled to put Caruso on third, and a Hawks' error scored Caruso to take a two-run lead. The Penmen were able to score one more run when Cara Daly (Plainville, Mass.) grounded out to the first baseman, and Bolduc advanced home to take a 6-3 lead.
The Hawks were unable to come up with any runs in the bottom of the inning, as Southern New Hampshire took game one.
Maloof went the complete 10 innings, totaling seven strikeouts, while allowing five hits and three runs. Tayla Trask pitched a complete game in the circle for the Hawks earning three strikeouts and giving up 10 hits and six runs.
In the second game of the day, Saint Anselm scored seven runs in the first two innings, while holding the Penmen scoreless to take the game by a score of 7-0.
The Hawks jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the top of the first, scoring on a pair of RBI singles, as well as a double to score another run.
The Penmen did not have an answer in the bottom of the inning, and the Hawks continued to build on their lead in the second.
They scored four more runs in the second inning on four hits, including three consecutive singles, and a double that scored three to take a 7-0 lead after two.
The Penmen had their best opportunity to score in the bottom of the sixth after Tesia Stanasek (Blackstone, Mass.) singled to center field, and advanced to second on a Hannan groundout. But, Stanasek was left on base as the Hawks retired the next two batters.
Rebecca Sherwood (Braintree, Mass.) started the game in the circle for the Penmen, but after giving up seven runs on seven hits, Maloof came in to relieve her. She pitched 5.1 innings recording two strikeouts and allowing three hits. Paige Cormier got the win for the Hawks in the circle going seven innings allowing three hits, no runs, and had one strikeout.
The Penmen return to action Friday, April 25 when they travel to Assumption for a league game at 4:00 p.m.
