Baseball Drops 15-Inning Marathon to No. 23 Lynn Monday

Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The No. 23-ranked Lynn University baseball team prevailed 2-1 over Southern New Hampshire University in a 15-inning non-conference contest Monday afternoon at the Lynn Baseball Field.  The Fighting Knights won their eighth straight to improve to 15-3, while the Penmen are now 4-3 on the season.

The hosts were finally able to scrape together a run in the bottom of the 15th inning.  Michael Stemle and Enrique Perez hit back-to-back one-out singles, with the pair advancing on a throwing error on Perez's hit to move into scoring position.  After SNHU reliever Alex Person (Foxboro, Mass.) was lifted for Joseph Zanghi (Milford, Conn.), Matt Ackerman was issued an intentional pass.  Alex Freedman lofted a fly ball to center field that allowed Stemle to scamper home with the winning run.

SNHU scored its lone run in the top of the seventh.  Al Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) worked a leadoff walk, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a groundout.  Bryan Toland (Wildwood, N.J.) struck out swinging, but the ball got away, allowing Toland to reach and Stanton to score.

Lynn took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Ackerman led off with a single.  After moving over on a sac bunt, Thomas Kain doubled to left to allow Ackerman to score.

SNHU's best chance to go ahead in extras came in the top of the 12th.  With two away, Riley Palmer (Goffstown, N.H.) stole second then moved to third on a throwing error, however, a strikeout would strand Palmer.  The Penmen also got runners into scoring position with two outs in the 13th and 14th innings, but came away empty both times.

Seven Penmen pitchers combined to allow 10 hits and just the two runs in 14.2 innings of work.  Starter Cole Warren (Bedford, N.H.) struck out eight over seven innings, scattering five hits while walking three.  Person, who took the loss, went five innings and allowed five hits and four walks while fanning two.  SNHU hurlers recorded 11 strikeouts, but 13 walks in the game.

Tyler Fortanascio (Oradell, N.J.) had two of Southern New Hampshire's five hits in the contest, while Stanton, Toland and Jamie Wollerman (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) had the others.  Toland extended his hit streak to six games with a fifth-inning single.

Southern New Hampshire is in action twice on Tuesday at the Santaluces Complex in Lantana, Fla., taking on Dominican (N.Y.) College at noon and nationally-ranked Wilmington (Del.) University at 3:30.
