MANCHESTER, N.H. – A goal by freshman Alena Woodarek (Springville, N.Y.) late in the first half proved to be the difference as Southern New Hampshire edged Franklin Pierce University 1-0 Wednesday night at Larkin Field. The Penmen snapped a five-game slide as they upped their record to 6-10-1 and 4-9 in NE-10 play, while the Ravens, who entered the game ranked No. 6 in the NCAA East Region rankings, are now 9-5-1 and 7-5-1 in the league.
The win marked career win No. 100 for first-year Penmen head coach Elie Monteiro, a 1997 graduate of SNHU. Monteiro won 94 games in 12 seasons as head coach at UMass Lowell.
Woodarek's goal, her third of the season, came in the 33rd minute. Junior Megan Hanna (Chelmsford, Mass.) played a ball from the left to Woodarek, who fired from 12 yards into the upper right corner for what proved to be the game's lone goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Autumn Scanlon (Waltham, Mass.) was not forced to make a save en route to her fifth shutout of the season, while Raven counterpart Casey Cook did not make a save in her complete-game effort. Franklin Pierce held a 5-4 shot advantage and took all three of the game's corner kicks.
Before the game, SNHU honored three seniors playing in the final home game of their career, Jennifer Arnold (South Burlington, Vt.), Olivia Boivin (Windsor, Maine) and Tara Murphy (Hampden, Mass.).
Southern New Hampshire closes out its season Saturday afternoon when it travels to the University of New Haven for a 1:00 contest.
