MANCHESTER, N.H. – Top-ranked Southern New Hampshire University got goals from six different players as it recorded an 8-1 Northeast-10 men's soccer victory over Assumption College Saturday night at Larkin Field. The Penmen improved to 12-0-1 and 9-0-1 in league play, while the Greyhounds now stand 2-8-2 and 2-5-2 in the league.
With the win, the Penmen are unbeaten in 36 games dating back to last season (34-0-2), tied for the second-longest unbeaten streak in Division II history, and undefeated in their last 31 Northeast-10 regular season and tournament games (30-0-1). Southern New Hampshire has also won 21 straight at Larkin Field. SNHU's eight goals are the most in a game since an 8-0 win over Assumption on October 20, 2004.
Kenny Doublette (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game. An initial shot by Kyle Logan (Shelburne, Vt.) was stopped by Assumption keeper Dana King, but Doublette knocked in the rebound for his 11th goal of the season. Keegan Campbell (Norton, Mass.) made it 2-0 1:53 later when he scored off a pair of beautiful connecting passes down low by Doublette and Logan. At the 12:26 mark, an Assumption own goal made it 3-0 as a Greyhound defender knocked a through ball in the box into his own net.
SNHU scored three more times in the final 10:52 of the first half. Miguel Carneiro (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) scored his third goal of the season in the 35th minute to make it 4-0, while Ryan Reynolds (Springfield, Mass.) made it 5-0 with his second goal of the campaign at the 39:42 mark after he took a pass from midfield from Yannick Kabala (Manchester, N.H.). Gilbert Manier (Rigali, Rwanda) scored his first goal in a Penmen uniform 1:07 before halftime to make it 6-0 at intermission.
Nate Fournier (Belchertown, Mass.) scored his third goal of the season in the 60th minute to make it 7-0, before Manier scored his second of the game at the 73:27 mark to close out the Penmen scoring. Assumption's Madison Barnwell ended SNHU's shutout bid with his goal with just over four minutes remaining, heading home a crossing pass by Derek Buckley.
Dom DiMaggio (Rome, N.Y.) made a pair of saves in the first half for SNHU before giving way to Andrew Pesci (Windham, N.H.), who did not make a save. King made four saves in the first half, while Pedro Hernandez registered eight saves over the final 45 minutes for the Greyhounds. The Penmen held a 32-9 shot advantage, and generated a 5-3 edge in corner kicks on the evening.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Wednesday afternoon when it travels to Bentley University for a 3:00 Northeast-10 contest.
