Box Score 2 MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Southern New Hampshire softball team split with Saint Anselm in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. The Penmen are now 27-13, while the Hawks are 18-19.
In the first game of the day, a scoreless seven innings brought the game into extra innings and the Penmen prevailed over Saint Anselm by a score of 4-3 in 11 innings.
Scoreless through nine innings, SNHU finally put a run on the board in the tenth after Kate Stanley (Kingston, Mass.) was placed on second base due to the international tie-breaker rule. Kelsea Cheney (Abington, Mass.) then brought Stanley in with an RBI bunt. Cheney advanced to third on a Cara Daly (Plainville, Mass.) single down the left field line, and Holly Eicher (Stoneham, Mass.) scored Cheney on a fielder's choice. The Penmen took a 2-0 lead out of the top of the inning.
However, the Hawks answered with two of their own in the bottom of the inning. Story, who was placed on second to begin the inning, made it around the bases on a pair of sacrifice hits from her teammates. With two outs in the inning, Galvotti doubled to left field, and a LeClair single to follow scored Galvotti from second to tie the game and send it into the eleventh inning.
The Penmen notched two more runs in the eleventh after an Ali Maloof (Norwood, Mass.) RBI fielder's choice scored the Katie Caruso (Newton, Mass.) from second. The second SNHU run came when Maloof scored on a Stanley fielder's choice. Heading into the bottom of the eleventh, the Penmen held a 4-2 lead over Saint Anselm.
The Hawks scored one final run in the bottom of the inning, but it was not enough as SNHU held onto the win.
Maloof pitched 11 innings for the Penmen while totaling 13 strikeouts and giving up six hits in the win, while Trask went 10.2 innings for Saint Anselm striking out nine and giving up seven hits.
In the second game of the day, Saint Anselm scored four runs in the sixth inning to defeat the Penmen by a score of 5-3.
SNHU took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first after Cristy Jenkins (Hudson, N.H.) led off with a single to left field. Maloof followed with a single to advance Jenkins, and after moving on a wild pitch, Stanley singled up the middle to score Maloof and Jenkins.
Saint Anselm did not score until the bottom of the fourth on a solo homerun to left field from Byrne to cut the Penmen lead to 2-1.
SNHU built on its lead in the sixth when Jenkins led-off again with a single. She advanced on a Lindsey Bolduc (Londonderry, N.H.) single, and scored when Stanley grounded out to second base.
However, the Hawks came alive in the bottom of the inning and scored four runs to take the lead. Four hits scored four Hawks' runs, and the Penmen could not answer in the final inning.
Dolores Mattice (Schenectady, N.Y.) pitched six innings for SNHU and recorded six strikeouts, while Cormier earned the win in the circle for Saint Anselm with one strikeout and allowing six hits.
The Penmen return to action Friday, April 26 when they host UMass Lowell in a league game under the lights at Penmen Field for a 7:00 p.m. start.
