Box Score WINCHENDON, Mass. – The Southern New Hampshire University hockey team defeated Franklin Pierce by a score of 5-1 Tuesday evening in Northeast-10 Conference play to earn its fifth straight win. The Penmen improve to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the league, while the Ravens drop to 0-4-1 and 0-1-1.
Four out of the five Penmen goals were scored on power play opportunities. Northeast-10 Player of the Week Joe Collins (Mansfield, Mass.) notched his eighth and ninth tallies of the season on man-up opportunities, while John Humphrey (Charlestown, Mass.) and Zach Lubinski (Hudson, N.H.) also scored on Penmen power plays.
The Penmen were able to take an early first period lead after Collins notched his first goal of the game from Jay Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.) and Dane Caracino (Belmont, Mass.) at the 9:14 mark in the period. Humphrey built on the lead with his third score of the season from Bryan Wright (Reading, Mass.) and Nick Riccio (Wilmington, Mass.) just five minutes after Collins' goal to take a 2-0 lead to end the first.
The scoring continued for the visitors in the second period as Steven Berry (Ashburn, Va.) notched his second score on the season from Jim Gabrione (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Sean McTiernan (Grayson, Ga.) 8:57 into the frame to give SNHU a 3-0 lead. However, Colella put the Ravens on the board after scoring an unassisted goal to cut the deficit to two.
The final period was all Penmen as Collins scored his second goal of the game with just over five minutes remaining from Casey Goll (Winthrop, Mass.), who leads the team in assists with nine. Lubinski capped off the win two minutes later with his first score of the season with a little help from Trevor Nelson (Exeter, N.H.).
Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) improves to 3-1 for the Penmen while turning away 22 shots in goal. Kyle Moran saved 34 shots for the Ravens in net. SNHU outshot the hosts 39-23, and connected on 4-8 power plays.
The Penmen return to action Saturday, November 23 when they return home to host Assumption College in league play for a 7:30 p.m. game.
