MANCHESTER, N.H. – Mohamed Toufik (Grande-Synthe, France) scored twice as No. 16 Southern New Hampshire University posted a 3-0 men's soccer victory over Queens (N.Y.) College Saturday at Larkin Field. The game marked the season opener for the Penmen, while the Knights fall to 1-1 on the season.
With the win, the Penmen are unbeaten at home in their last 12 games, dating back to the end of the 2009 season (10-0-2). Southern New Hampshire has also shut out its last eight opponents at Larkin Field, with the last goal against the Penmen scored on September 4, 2010 by C.W. Post in a 3-1 SNHU victory.
Southern New Hampshire got on the board just over nine minutes into the game when Chris Tsonis (Dartmouth, Mass.) converted a penalty kick. The hosts were awarded the penalty kick when Jordan Branco (Norton, Mass.) was hauled down in the box by a Queens defender.
The Penmen doubled their advantage in the 27th minute. Branco dribbled a ball into the box from the left side and dropped it off to Miguel Carneiro (New Milford, Conn.), standing 12 yards out. Carneiro one-timed it to Toufik, who blasted it from the top of the 18 for his first goal in a Penmen uniform.
Toufik's second goal came on a breakaway just over four minutes into the second half, with his shot from 15 yards finding the right side of the Knight goal.
Joey Kapinos (Ludlow, Mass.) earned the shutout by turning aside four shots. Queens keeper Demetrios Touros made five saves as the Penmen outshot the Knights 12-7.
Southern New Hampshire opens Northeast-10 play Wednesday night when it hosts Saint Anselm College in a 7:00 match at Larkin Field.
