– Southern New Hampshire University and Pace
University split a Northeast-10 baseball doubleheader Saturday
afternoon. The Setters posted an 11-3 win in the opener
before the Penmen came back to register a 10-5 win in the
nightcap. Pace is now 7-17 and 3-9 in the NE-10, while
Southern New Hampshire is 10-14 and 3-4 in the league.
The Penmen took a 2-1 lead in the
bottom of the first of the nightcap on a two-run home run by
Thomas Quicker (West Islip, N.Y.). SNHU
would make it 3-1 in the third when Eric Pelletier
(Beverly, Mass.) reached on a leadoff single and scored from third
on a wild pitch.
Pace would score three unearned
runs in the sixth, collecting a pair of hits but also taking
advantage of two SNHU errors and a hit by pitch. The Penmen
would take the lead for good in the bottom of the frame as it
scored five times, including a three-run double to the gap in left
by Brandon Dutch (Monroe, Conn.). All five
of SNHU's runs came with two outs.
The hosts added two runs in the
seventh. Jon Minucci (Madison, Conn.) was
hit by a pitch to start the inning and scored on a sac fly by
Quicker. Scott Rogers (Orr's Island,
Maine), who followed Minucci by working a walk, scored on a wild
pitch.
Quicker, Pelletier and Matt
Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.) each finished with two hits in
the nightcap, with Quicker driving in four runs.
Bryant Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.) picked up his second
win of the season on the hill, scattering seven hits and allowing
four runs (one earned) in six innings of work.
In the opener, Pace scored in five
of the first six innings, including a five-run sixth, to build an
11-3 lead. The Penmen led 3-2 after one frame, with Quicker
and Tim Rines (Merrimack, N.H.) each recording RBI
singles, but the Setters would get two runs in the second and a
solo home run by Vinny Dammann in the third. In the sixth,
Pace got just two hits, but took advantage of two walks and a pair
of Penmen fielding miscues, as well as a wild pitch.
Bobby Wronski
(Arlington, Mass.) led SNHU with a pair of hits in the opener as
Pace outhit Southern New Hampshire 11-7. Dammann and Tyler
Hart each had two hits and three RBI for the Setters.
Brad Monroe
(Hampton Falls, N.H.) took the loss for SNHU, allowing nine hits
and six runs (four earned) in 4.1 innings while fanning five.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Monday when it travels to Stonehill College for a 3:30 game.
