NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.
– Southern New Hampshire University and Merrimack
College halved a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader
Friday afternoon. The Penmen posted a 9-3 win in the opener
before the Warriors came back for a 7-4 win in the nightcap.
SNHU is now 4-8 and 1-1 in the NE-10, while the Warriors are now
5-10 and 1-1 in the league.
In the opener, the Penmen staked
themselves to a 2-0 lead after one inning. A single by
Amanda Barton (Franklin, N.H.) scored
Kelsey Griffin (Scarborough, Maine), while
Andrea Clausi (Kingston, N.Y.) scored on a
sacrifice fly by Kate Stanley (Kingston,
Mass.). The Penmen made it 3-0 in the fourth when
Melissa Vitagliano (Bedford, N.H.) led off the
inning with a single and scored on a Clausi double.
Merrimack would score in the top of
the fourth to make it 3-1, but the Penmen would score six times
over the final two innings. Barton had RBI singles in the
sixth and seventh as SNHU collected six hits over the final two
frames.
Barton and Vitagliano each finished
3-3 in the opener, with Barton driving in three runs. Clausi
was 2-4 with a pair of runs driven in as the Penmen outhit the
Warriors 14-9. Griffin picked up the win in the circle for
SNHU, scattering nine hits in her complete-game effort.
In the nightcap, Merrimack would
jump out to a 3-0 lead after one inning and owned a 5-1 lead
following the conclusion of the second. The Penmen would
plate a run in the second when a double by Elena
Anderson (Salem, Wis.) scored Melissa
Pessotti (Burlington, Mass.). Merrimack would score
two more times in the fifth to take a 7-1 lead.
The Penmen would attempt to get
back in the game with three runs in the top of the sixth. A
three-run home run by Pessotti plated Barton and Cristy
Jenkins (Hudson, Mass.), who opened the inning by working
back-to-back walks.
Pessotti and Vitagliano led the
Penmen with two hits apiece. Jen Garloff
(Lebanon, Pa.) took the loss in the circle for SNHU, starting and
working the first inning-plus before giving way to Barton, who
allowed two runs and six hits in five innings of work.
Southern New Hampshire opens its
home schedule Saturday when it hosts Stonehill in a noon
doubleheader at Penmen Field.
