WORCESTER, Mass.
– Host Assumption College swept a Northeast-10
baseball doubleheader from Southern New Hampshire University by
scores of 4-2 and 6-5 on Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds
improve to 13-8 and 4-2 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are 5-13 and
0-3 in the league.
SNHU led most of the way in game
two, but the Greyhounds scored four times in the bottom of the
eighth to take a 5-3 lead. The Penmen would rally to tie the
game in the top of the ninth. Leadoff hitter Brandon
Dutch (Monroe, Conn.) singled and would score on a single
by Brendan O'Brien (East Bridgewater,
Mass.). Scott Rogers (Orr's Island,
Maine) would score when Thomas Quicker (West
Islip, N.Y.) reached on an error.
Assumption would score the winning
run in the bottom of the ninth when Blake Youngblood worked a
leadoff walk and scored on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Tim
Scafidi.
The Penmen jumped out to a 1-0 lead
in the top of the first when Eric Pelletier
(Beverly, Mass.) reached on a two-out single and scored on a double
by Bobby Wronski (Arlington, Mass.). SNHU
tacked on two runs in the fourth when a double by Rogers scored
Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.) and Tim
Rines (Merrimack, N.H.).
Assumption scored four times in the
bottom of the eighth, with the key hit a three-run double by Eddie
McDonald.
Rines led Southern New Hampshire
with three hits, as the Penmen outhit the Greyhounds 12-9.
Bryant Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.) worked 7.1 innings
on the mound for the Penmen and allowed eight hits and three runs
while fanning eight. Derek Anderson (Dracut,
Mass.) took the loss, working the final 1.1 innings in relief.
In the opener, Assumption jumped
out to a 1-0 lead in the first, then scored three more times in the
fourth. The Penmen would get a pair of runs back in the
seventh. Boulter led off the frame with a single and scored
on a groundout by Rogers. A single by Quicker played
Kevin Spatkowski (Bristol, Conn.) who doubled
following Boulter's single.
Brad Monroe
(Hampton Falls, N.H.) took the loss for the Penmen, working the
eight-inning complete game and scattering eight hits while
surrendering four runs. He struck out six. Assumption
outhit SNHU 8-5 in the opener.
Southern New Hampshire travels to
UMass Lowell for a single contest starting at 1:00 Sunday.
