SYRACUSE, N.Y. -
Top-seeded Le Moyne College advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA
Division II Men's Soccer Championship with a 3-2 penalty kick
shootout win over third-seeded Southern New Hampshire University in
the East Region final at the Niland Athletic Complex Sunday, after
the two teams played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw. The
Dolphins, who are now 18-2-3 overall, advance to the semifinals in
Tampa Thursday, December 3, while the Penmen, who were making their
eighth national quarterfinal appearance, see their season come to a
close at 14-4-4 overall.
In the shootout, the Penmen shot
first, and Mike Adam's (Ludlow, Mass.) shot was
stopped by Le Moyne goalie Steve White. Zach Kuzemka made his
shot for Le Moyne to give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead.
A shot by SNHU's next shooter,
Jayme Kapinos (Ludlow, Mass.) was initially
stopped by White, but the ball sailed in the air, landed, and
rolled over the goal line. After a discussion by the
officials, the goal was awarded to the Penmen. Jesse Carr
then converted his penalty kick for a 2-1 lead. Both teams
came up empty in the third round, as Richard
Kentish (Kingston, Jamaica) saw his attempt go off the
left post, while Sean Lawlor banged a shot off the crossbar for Le
Moyne.
Paul D'Angelo
(Gloucester, Mass.) converted in the fourth round for SNHU,
followed by an successful attempt by Le Moyne's Marcus Debottis to
give the hosts a 3-2 lead heading into the final round. An
attempt to the left by SNHU's Adrian Schippers
(Ashby, Mass.) was snuffed out by White to allow the Dolphins to
advance to their first-ever semifinal appearance.
After a scoreless first half, Le
Moyne struck first with just over 15 minutes to play. Kuzemka
took a pass from Josh Mabee and fired a left-footed shot from eight
yards past Penmen keeper Joey Kapinos (Ludlow,
Mass.).
SNHU had two prime opportunities to
tie the game with 11 minutes left. A swirling kick from 10
yards out by Christian Rodriguez (Manchester,
N.H.) was knocked aside by White at the last possible moment.
On the ensuing corner kick, PJ Burnette
(Brunswick, Maine) sent a ball just high over the crossbar.
The Penmen came up with the
equalizer with 8:36 remaining. Danny
Hernandez (Salem, N.H.) sent a ball into the box from the
left side to Chris Tsonis (Dartmouth, Mass.), who
fired a 12-yarder that found the right side of the goal past a
diving White.
In the two overtimes, Southern New
Hampshire had the best chance two minutes into the second 10-minute
session when Adam lifted a 20-yarder that was on target, but caught
by White.
White made nine saves for Le Moyne,
as the Penmen outshot the Dolphins 20-11, including a 15-6
advantage in the second half and the two overtimes. Joey
Kapinos made one save for the Penmen.
