MANCHESTER, N.H. - A walkoff two-run home run by freshman
Elena Anderson (Salem, WI) in the bottom of the
eighth inning allowed Southern New Hampshire University to salvage
a split of a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader with Stonehill
College with a 3-1 win in the nightcap Sunday afternoon. The
Skyhawks recorded a 3-2, 10-inning victory in the opener.
Southern New Hampshire is now 16-21 and 12-14 in the NE-10, while
Stonehill is 23-19 and 15-13 in league play.
Tied 1-1 going into the bottom of
the eighth, Ashley Guertin (Manchester, NH) led
off the frame for the Penmen with a single through the left
side. Stonehill replaced pitcher Katie Mottau with Danielle
Mason. The next batter, Casey Stoodley
(Salem, NH) bunted Guertin over before Anderson belted a ball to
straightaway center that cleared the fence to give the hosts the
victory.
Stonehill had jumped out to a 1-0
lead in the top of the third when Meghan Sheehy hit a two-out solo
home run. The Penmen tied the game in the bottom of the sixth
when they scraped together a run. Andrea
Clausi (Kingston, NY) worked a leadoff walk, then when
Stoodley reached on a bunt single with one out, Clausi would
advance to third on a throwing error. Anderson would then
lift a sacrifice fly to left to score Clausi.
Anderson finished 3-3 with three
RBI, while Karissa Bettencourt (Norton, MA) had a
pair of hits. Ashley Bernstein (Stoughton,
MA) allowed just four hits to earn the win while striking out four.
In the opener, Stonehill scored
twice in the top of the 10th to take a 3-1 lead. The Penmen
would get a run back in the bottom of the inning when
Laurie Boland (Worcester, MA) scored when
Michelle Maranto (East Hampstead, NH) reached on
an error. Southern New Hampshire would strand two runners to
end the game.
SNHU nearly won the game in the
bottom of the ninth. Valerie Martins
(Somerset, MA) led off the inning with a double to the gap in
left-center. After the next two batters grounded out, Boland
hit a rope to the gap in left-center, but was robbed on a
game-saving diving catch by Stonehill center fielder Kate Brides.
Stonehill took a 1-0 lead in the
top of the second when Jaime Ippolito led off the inning with a
double and later scored on a single by Gina Vivona. The
Penmen tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Bernstein
belted a solo home run, which was also her 100th career hit.
Martins had three hits in the
opener while Clausi had two hits. Karissa
Bettencourt (Norton, MA) also registered her 100th career
hit in the opener with a fifth inning single to right.
Mary Bradford (Big Bear, CA) took the loss for
SNHU, allowing seven hits in 10 innings of work while fanning six.
SNHU closes out the regular season
Tuesday when it travels to Assumption College for a 3:00
doubleheader.
