Assumption Escapes With 62-60 Women's Hoop Win

BOX SCORE

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Trish Gardner hit a three-pointer with 27 seconds remaining to lift Assumption College to a 62-60 Northeast-10 women's basketball victory over Southern New Hampshire University at the SNHU Fieldhouse on Saturday.  The Greyhounds, who entered the game ranked No. 4 in the Northeast Region, improved to 18-5 overall and 12-4 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 11-10 and 7-9 in the league.

Charde Floyd led Assumption with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Beth Plasski totaled 10 points.  Gardner finished with seven points.  Sara Tucker (Red Hook, NY) was the lone SNHU player in double figures as she totaled 13 points.  Ashara Carrington (Marblehead, MA) registered nine points while Heather Marino (Billerica, MA) added eight points.

SNHU trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half and was down 57-47 with 6:06 left when it ran off nine unanswered points.  A layup by Stephanie Houghton (Manchester, NH) with 2:56 left cut the Greyhound lead to one, 57-56.  Assumption would reclaim a three-point cushion on a pair of free throws by Megan Urban with 1:51 to play, but Tucker scored on SNHU's next possession to make it a 59-58 ballgame.

Assumption would come up empty on its next possession and the Penmen would take a 60-59 lead with 40 seconds to play when Marino put back an initial miss by Alyssa Whitney (Somerville, MA) down low.  The Greyhounds came down and with 27 seconds to play, Gardner drilled her lone three-point attempt of the contest to give her team the lead once again.  After a timeout, SNHU would turn the ball over on an offensive foul, but would get one final chance when Assumption missed a pair of free throws.  The Penmen got one final look at the basket but a driving layup by Houghton was off the mark.

The Penmen opened up a 15-6 lead 7:22 into the game on a layup by Julia Houghtaling (Franconia, NH).  Assumption scored seven straight to cut the lead to 15-13 on a Floyd basket at the 11:12 mark, but the Penmen responded with four points.  SNHU rebuilt a nine-point advantage, 30-21 with just under five minutes to go on a Whitney basket, but Assumption scored 15 unanswered points to go up 36-30 and led 36-32 at halftime.

SNHU held a 39-36 rebounding advantage but Assumption outrebounded the Penmen on the offensive glass 15-9.  The Greyhounds were just 10-20 at the free throw line and 2-10 behind the arc, but forced 24 SNHU turnovers.

SNHU returns to action Tuesday night when it travels to The College of Saint Rose for a 5:30 contest in Albany, NY.
