MANSFIELD, Mass. – The Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team was chosen to place fourth in the Northeast-10 standings this season according to the NE10 Preseason Coaches' Poll that was released Wednesday.
Southern New Hampshire finished with 73 points, while defending NE10 Champion Stonehill College was picked to repeat with nine first-place votes and 99 points. Adelphi University (82) edged Le Moyne College (81) for second place, with each recording a first-place vote.
Assumption College (68), the University of New Haven (62) and Bentley University (38) comprised the middle of the poll, while Saint Anselm College (31), Franklin Pierce University (30), Saint Michael's College (30) and American International College (11) rounded it out.
Head coach Greg Coache, who will enter his 13th season with the team, will look to get the Penmen back to their winning ways after the squad went 9-9 and missed advancing to the semifinal round of the NE10 Championship for the first time in 11 years.
SNHU returns reigning NE10 Rookie of the Year Alexxa Etienne (Bayamon, Puerto Rico), who went 15-7, overall, a year ago, including 13-5 at the No. 3 flight and 9-2 in league play. The only other member of the starting lineup to return is fellow sophomore Elizabeth Dwyer (Cutchogue, N.Y.), who finished 8-7, playing at Nos. 5 and 6. She missed some time with an injury and was 5-2 in conference action. The outlook is bright, however, with four extremely talented newcomers joining the program.
SNHU gets its season underway Saturday, Sept. 7 when it travels to take on Le Moyne College, before heading home to kick off its Penmen Stadium Tennis Courts slate Tuesday, Sept. 17 (3 p.m.) against Saint Anselm College.
