Freshman Laura van der Doorn (Beverwijk, Netherlands) needed just nine seconds to send the Southern New Hampshire University field hockey team past Saint Michael's College, 1-0, in overtime Tuesday evening at Larkin Field.
Following a fairly evenly-matched 70 minutes of regulation hockey, the two teams set out to score the game's first goal in the extra session. The Penmen won the flip, with van der Doorn taking the ball straight up the middle of the field, dodging a handful of Purple Knight defenders before finding space in the middle of the circle and chipping a ball that sailed over the left shoulder of Saint Michael's goalkeeper Abigail Bowie and into the top right corner of the net with just nine seconds ticking off the game clock.
-The win marked the first overtime victory for Southern New Hampshire in program history.
-The Penmen did not play an overtime game during their first two years of existence and have now played three this season. SNHU dropped 1-0 double-overtime decisions at Larkin to Pace University on Sept. 10 and American International College on Sept. 24.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Melanie Rennie (Madison, Conn.) turned away all three shots she faced for her third career shutout.
-Bowie stopped four of five shots for the Purple Knights.
-Shots were even at seven apiece, while Saint Michael's held an 8-4 advantage in penalty corners.
The Penmen return to action Saturday, Oct. 15 (4 p.m.) when they take on Merrimack College. The next home match for SNHU is Sunday, Oct. 23 (1 p.m.) when they play host to Stonehill College at Larkin Field.
