(Hickory, N.C.) - The SNHU softball team opened the 2022 regular season dropping a doubleheader on Friday at Lenoir-Rhyne. The Penmen were shut out 8-0 before falling 6-2 in the nightcap.
KEY MOMENTS - GAME 1
- Senior Chloe Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) starts in the circle and did not allow an earned run in 3.2 innings. Overall, she allowed six unearned runs on eight hits.
- Sophomore Leine McKechnie (Passadumkeag, Maine) tossed the final 0.2 inning, allowing 2 earned runs on three hits.
- Junior Bryn Garczynski recorded the Penmen's first hit in the third inning but was stranded at second base.
- Griffin notched the squad's only other hit in the fourth, but again was left on second.
- Lenoir-Rhyne scored three in the second, three in the fourth and a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the win.
- Lauren Rakes and Morgan Beeler combined to shutout the Penmen on just two hits over five innings.
KEY MOMENTS - GAME 2
- Trailing 2-0 in the third, the Penmen rallied to tie it at 2-2 on an RBI single by sophomore Bella Dickinson (Scarborough, Maine) and a groundout by Griffin.
- The Bears got back on top with a single run in the home half of the third, before opening things up with a three-run fifth inning to conclude scoring at 6-2.
- Dickinson paced the offense with a pair of hits (2-4; 1 RBI).
- In the circle, freshman Gwyn Hammond (Los Angeles, Calif.) started and allowed six runs, all earned, on eight hits and a walk in 4.1 innings.
- McKechnie closed out the game by allowing no runs in 1.2 innings including a pair of strikeouts.
NOTES
- The games were the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
- The February 18th start date was the earlier since 2019 when the team played on Feb. 15 in Myrtle Beach. Â
- The game marks the first non-conference contests since March 11, 2020 before the pandemic.

- SNHU continues its southern tour at Belmont Abbey for a non-conference doubleheader. Game times are 12, 2 pm.
- The Penmen home their home slate on Thursday, March 24 against Queens College.
