Junior Ashley Elder (Bristol, Conn.) turned in a pair of top-three finishes Friday, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's track and field team competed at the VCU Ram Invitational.
Elder finished first among NCAA Division II athletes, and second overall, in the hammer throw with a toss of 44.71 meters (146 feet, 8 inches) that put her just over a meter outside the mark of the event winner. Elder was also third in the shot put, finishing second among DII competitors with a distance of 12.44 meters (40 feet, 9.75 inches).
Sophomore Alanna Murphy (Nashua, N.H.) was the other Penmen to submit a top-10 finish, placing ninth in the triple jump with a leap of 10.68 meters (35 feet, 0.5 inches) that put her third in Division II.
Junior Ashley Dennis (Coventry, R.I.) ran to a 13th-place finish in the 1500-meter dash, crossing the finish line second among DII runners in a time of five minutes, 27.07 seconds.
In the 200 meters, sophomore Sam Cummings (Peabody, Mass.) led the way for SNHU with a 21st-place showing (fifth in DII) in a time of 27.83. Murphy, meanwhile, was 27th (28.44) and sophomore Natalie Gallagher (Windham, N.H.) came in 30th (29.28).

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Saturday, March 17 at the Tribe Invitational, hosted by William & Mary College.
