AUSTIN, Texas – Graduate student Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) of the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team was chosen for the Google Cloud Academic All-America Men's At-Large First Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced Thursday afternoon.
Fernandes, a business administration major with a 3.96 GPA, who finished his pursuit of his MBA with a perfect 4.0 GPA, earns the honor for the second straight season after being named a Second Teamer a year ago. Fernandes was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region Senior Player of the Year, Northeast-10 Player of the Year (for the third straight season), an NE10 All-Conference First Team selection (for the fourth time), an NE10 Man of the Year finalist, a Google Cloud Academic All-District Men's At-Large Team honoree (for the second consecutive year) and an NE10 Academic All-Conference pick (for the third year-in-a-row). Fernandes finished the season 21-5, overall in singles play, including 17-4 at the top flight and a perfect 9-0 in league play. SNHU's all-time singles wins leader at 80, Fernandes won 14 of his last 16 matches, and fell just three wins shy of matching the single-season program record of 24 victories that he set a year ago.
The Google Cloud Academic All-America® program, which recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the athletic realm and in the classroom, is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2018-19 Division II Academic All-America® teams program.
The at-large program for the Google Cloud Academic All-America® program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo for both men and women; bowling, crew and field hockey for women; and volleyball and wrestling for men.
