Sophomore Ashley Elder (Bristol, Conn.) of the Southern New Hampshire University women's track and field team posted the top NCAA Division II performance in the discus throw Saturday, as the Penmen wrapped up the 2017 New England Outdoor Championships at Williams College.
Elder, who finished fourth in the discus at the Northeast-10 Championships a week ago, hurled the disc a distance of 42.07 meters (138 feet) to slot in at No. 4. Leeyan Redwood of Northeastern University took top honors in the event with a throw of 45.09 meters, and she was followed by Ariela Slutsky (45.01 meters) of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Leah Wolf (43.44 meters) of the University of Rhode Island.
Freshmen Alanna Murphy (Nashua, N.H.) and Jill Couto (Newton Junction, N.H.) turned in top-five Division II finishes on Saturday in the triple jump and 800-meter run, respectively. Murphy was fifth in the DII ranks in the triple jump as she propelled herself 11.06 meters (36 feet, 3.5 inches), which was good enough for No. 15 overall. Couto was second in Division II in the 800-meter run with a time of two minutes, 19.27 seconds, which slotted her No. 27 overall in the event.
- Northeastern University claimed the team title with a combined 102.50 points, and narrowly edged the University of Rhode Island, who finished with 102 points. The University of New Hampshire was third with 74 points.
