MANSFIELD, Mass. – Senior Anna Sala (Matadepera, Spain) and freshman Alexxa Etienne (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) of the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team were picked as the Northeast-10 Player and Rookie of the Week. Respectively, for the period ending Oct. 14, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Sala went 4-0 during a 2-0 week for the Penmen, including 2-0 at No. 1 singles. Sala posted 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win against Abby Ramsay in a 7-0 win at Saint Michael's College on Saturday before triumphing over Alana Wyatt, 6-4, 6-2, in Sunday's 7-0 blanking of Franklin Pierce University. Sala also combined with classmate Sofia Morais (Porto, Portugal) for a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles over Ramsay and Margaret de Pont to clinch the point against Saint Michael's and then shut out Wyatt and Brigid Washburn at No. 1 to kick off doubles play against FPU.
Etienne was also 4-0, including 2-0 at No. 3 singles. Etienne opened singles at Saint Michael's by taking down Melissa Wood, 6-1, 6-0, before doing the same thing at Franklin Pierce with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Sarah Rich. Etienne and senior Rachel Wagner (Framingham, Mass.) added a pair of No. 2 doubles wins, including a 6-3 victory against Saint Michael's Wood and Caroline Sumner, and a 6-1 triumph over Franklin Pierce's Rich and Grayson LaCroix.
Through 13 matches this season, Sala is 7-6 in singles play, including 7-3 in league action, while Etienne is 11-2 and 9-1 in the NE10.
Sala, Etienne and the Penmen are back in action Saturday, Oct. 20 (1 p.m.) when play host to Stonehill College.
