Freshmen Alexxa Etienne (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) and Elizabeth Dwyer (Cutchogue, N.Y.) did not lose a game in their two wins, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team bounced back with a 6-1 defeat of American International College on Sunday afternoon at the SNHU Tennis Courts at Penmen Stadium.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

  • Etienne swept past Sophie Roberge, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and also teamed with senior Rachel Wagner (Framingham, Mass.) for a 6-0 blanking of Taylor Pankewicz and Cecilia Salazar at No. 2 doubles.
  • Dwyer was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 5 singles over Alice Calabrese, in addition to capturing a 6-0 victory with junior Phebe Hall (Bennington, Vt.) at No. 3 doubles against Calabrese and Mireya Ortega.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Southern New Hampshire swept doubles, winning at Nos. 3 and 2 to secure the point before seniors Anna Sala (Matadepera, Spain) and Sofia Morais (Porto, Portugal) added a 6-4 win at No. 1 against Meri Jimeno-Vicente and Roberge.
  • Dwyer and Etienne finished off their perfect days with their singles win, while Morais added a 6-0, 6-0 triumph of her own at No. 2 singles against Salazar to put the Penmen up 4-0 and clinch the match.
  • Wagner was also nearly perfect, winning her No. 4 singles match against Pankewicz, 6-1, 6-0.
  • Junior Abbey Killiam (Rowley, Mass.) made it 6-0 with her 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 6 over Ortega.
  • AIC took its only point at No. 1 singles, as Jimeno-Vicente outlasted Sala, 6-0, 5-7, 10-7.

NOTES

  • The singles win for Killiam is her third career victory with the Penmen and first since Feb. 18, 2017.

  • The Penmen are back in action Wednesday, Sept. 26 (4 p.m.) when they take on crosstown-rival Saint Anselm College.
  • The next home match for SNHU is Tuesday, Oct. 2 (3 p.m.) when it plays host to Stonehill College.
