Junior Sofia Morais (Porto, Portugal) captured a pair of matches, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team was handed a 7-2 defeat by Concordia (N.Y.) College on Saturday, as the Penmen celebrated Senior Day, as well as their first match on the new SNHU Tennis Courts at Penmen Stadium.
Morais teamed with classmate Anna Sala (Matadepera, Spain) to salvage doubles, as the duo posted an 8-5 win against Siri Victorsson and Kristel Kalm, to slice the Penmen deficit in half at 2-1, heading to singles play.
The Clippers won handily at Nos. 6, 5 and 3 to open singles and clinch the match. Morais then blanked Kalm, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2, before Concordia again won easily at No. 1 over an ailing Sala and again at No. 4, as Josefina Torres rallied past senior Lindsay Baum (No. Salem, N.Y.) for a 3-6, 6-4, 10-2 victory.
- The Penmen honored seniors Baum and Jacqueline Youngdahl (No. Providence, R.I.), as well as junior Kaitlyn Poje (E. Stroudsburg, Pa.), prior to the match.
- Southern New Hampshire is ranked 10th in the ITA East Region rankings, while the Clippers are third.
The Penmen wrapped up their regular season and will now await their fate to see if they earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
