Juniors Anna Sala (Matadepera, Spain) and Kaitlyn Poje (E. Stroudsburg, Pa.) each won two matches, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team was edged by Roberts Wesleyan College, 5-4, Friday at the YMCA Allard Center of Goffstown in its first contest since the fall.
After dropping No. 3, Southern New Hampshire finished doubles play strong, as Sala and classmate Sofia Morais (Porto, Portugal) posted an 8-5 win against Nthabi Mogopodi and Andrea Gallardo at No. 1 doubles, before Poje and senior Lindsay Baum (No. Salem, N.Y.) pulled out a 9-7 victory over Bijisha Shrestha and Marousia Bosch at No. 2.
The Redhawks pulled even to begin singles play with a win at No. 5, but Sala fended off Mogopodi, 6-2, 7-6 (5-3) at No. 1 to keep the Penmen in front, 3-2. Following a Roberts Wesleyan win at No. 2, Poje rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 triumph against Bosch at No. 3 to put SNHU on the verge of clinching the match, up 4-3.
Roberts Wesleyan, however, had other ideas, winning at Nos. 6 and 4 to come from behind and steal the victory.
- The Penmen were playing for the first time since Oct. 27, and without two members of their normal lineup.
- Southern New Hampshire is ranked 10th in the ITA East Region rankings.
The Penmen wrap up their regular season Saturday, April 7 (11 a.m.) when they play host to Concordia (N.Y.) College.
