Women's Tennis Claims No. 2 Seed in East Region, Hosts Chestnut Hill Saturday
MANCHESTER, N.H. –The Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team has secured the No. 2 seed in the East Region of the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship and will serve as one of two regional hosts. The Penmen, who are making their fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance, will face seventh-seeded Chestnut Hill College in a 10:00 am match at The Derryfield School in Manchester.
Saturday's other first round contest features third-seeded University of the District of Columbia and sixth-seeded Adelphi University, with that match taking place at 1:00. The two first-round winners will square off Sunday at noon, with that match also taking place at Derryfield. Sunday's winner will advance to the round of 16, which kicks off in Louisville, Kentucky as part of the NCAA Division II Spring Sports Festival May 16.
SNHU earned the Northeast-10 Conference's automatic bid after capturing its third-straight NE-10 Tournament title. The Penmen enter the NCAAs with an 18-5 mark and on a eight-match win streak. SNHU and Chestnut Hill met during the regular season, with the Penmen posting a 6-3 win on March 17. Southern New Hampshire has claimed a first-round victory in each of its three NCAA tournament appearances.
Chestnut Hill, with a 19-6 record, is making its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. The Griffins finished Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play with a 7-1 mark and advanced to the semifinals of the CACC Tournament, where they fell to Goldey-Beacom.
UDC (15-3) has won four in a row entering the NCAA Tournament and most recently played on April 10 when it defeated Virginia State 9-0. The Firebirds captured the East Coast Conference tournament title in just their second season in the league in October when they topped New York Institute of Technology 5-1.
Adelphi, at 16-4 overall and 12-1 in the NE-10, captured a share of the NE-10 regular season title along with SNHU and Stonehill College, but was eliminated in the NE-10 semifinals by the Penmen by a 5-0 count. The Panthers fell to the Firebirds 5-4 in a regular season meeting on March 11 in Washington, D.C.
